Being a Translator must be well versed in vocabulary dealing with specialty. Must follow ethical procedures and policies that protect the confidentiality of information. Additionally, Translator may require a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. The Translator gains exposure to some of the complex tasks within the job function. Occasionally directed in several aspects of the work. Our work impacts farmworkers, Indigenous populations, individuals with disabilities, immigrant populations, LGBTQ communities, women, children, and low-income families in rural areas.

    Reporting to the Language Justice Initiative (LJI) Manager, the LJI Translator will provide Spanish-English legal translation for CRLA offices and programs across the state.

    Roles & Responsibilities:

    • Translation:
      • Provide Spanish-English translation of legal documents and materials related to client-advocate communication, community education and outreach, public relations, board of directors, staff training, and internal staff communication.
      • Utilize a Computer Assisted Translation (CAT) platform to promote efficiency and consistency across CRLA translations.
      • Complete translations in collaboration with other translators so that all translations go through a 2-step review process.
      • Edit and proofread the work of other CRLA translators.
      • Develop and maintain tailored CRLA glossaries and term bases.

    In addition to the primary role focused on translation, the LJI Translator will contribute to CRLA in the following ways as their capacity allows:

    • Interpreting: Provide Spanish-English interpreting services.
    • Coordination: Coordinate language services for CRLA offices and programs, including:
      • Scheduling interpreters for calls, meetings, and events.
      • Project management of complex translation requests.
      • Providing Tech & Logistics Coordination (TLC) for remote, onsite, and hybrid multilingual events, including setting up and managing audio-visual systems.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications:

    • Advanced spoken and written proficiency in English and Latin American Spanish.
    • Advanced training and a minimum of 2 years professional experience in Spanish-English translation. Study or experience with legal translation is a plus.
    • Excellent editing and proofreading skills in Spanish and English.
    • Knowledge of language justice concepts and best practices.
    • Excellent teamwork, communication, and interpersonal skills.
    • Superior organizational and time management skills, especially as demonstrated by the ability to meet deadlines.
    • Computer skills and enthusiasm about learning new technology.
    • Experience or willingness to learn how to manage audio-visual systems for meetings.

    Preferred Education and Experience:

    A highly qualified and desirable candidate would also have the following:

    • Completion of a university-level translator or interpreter education program.
    • American Translator Association (ATA) certification or state/federal court interpreter certification.
    • Experience with CAT tools.
    • Experience or training in IT and/or audio engineering.
    • Experience working in a non-profit legal services environment.
    • Experience serving low-income clients living in rural areas, especially in the areas of labor, housing, education, civil rights and/or public benefits.

    COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

    CRLA offers a diverse, family-friendly environment and compensation based on competitive public interest salaries; the expected hourly pay range for this position is $54,000 - $67,000. CRLA provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what is reasonably expected to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, the program’s budget availability, internal equity, and external market pay for comparable jobs. Generous benefits package includes 100% employer-covered medical, dental, vision, life, and short & long-term disability insurance for employees and up to 50% for dependents coverage; and 401K retirement plan with CRLA contribution effective immediately. Generous paid leave policy includes 15 days of sick leave, 15 holidays each year, and vacation (accrue 15 days for the first year of service and 20 days after one year of service at CRLA).
