    Brief Summary of Job Duties The Interpreter/ Translator works between spoken English and American Sign Language and provides communication between UCSB students and faculty, staff, and students for academic classes, various meetings, and social functions related to academic and University sponsored activities. Provide interpreting / transliterating services as appropriate based on the needs of students who are Deaf. Develop tracking sheets of technical vocabulary needed for specific academic classes. Under the supervision of the Deaf Services Coordinator (DSC), work with students to develop conceptual technical vocabulary necessary for classes. Keep abreast of educational interpreting issues in Higher Education and new technical vocabulary developed. Interface with faculty, staff and students to explain the role of the interpreter / transliterator in the absence of DSC. Assist with physical placement, lighting, etc. of the interpreting / transliterating setting. Perform other duties related to the provision of support services to deaf and hard-of- hearing students as assigned by the DSC. The Interpreter is expected to prepare for all work assignments including reading, researching topics, and familiarizing themselves with current topics for the students with whom they work. The Interpreter is expected to attend professional workshops (online or in person) in the field of interpreting to continue to keep up-to-date on the latest techniques and methodologies for improving in their job. The Interpreter will learn the software that the department uses for everyday tasks such as Box, Google Drive, Adobe Acrobat, Zoom, MS Word, MS Power Point, Gauchospace, Canvas and the DSP online system. The Interpreter will become familiar with the process of requesting interpreting services from approved vendors. Check UCSB working calendar multiple times/day to ensure they are aware of any schedule changes and updates.

    Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

    * Interpreting/Transliterating - 80%: On an as needed basis, assists Deaf students by acting as their interpreter during academic courses; seminars; meetings; and social events related to UCSB academics. Provide as appropriate, sign language interpretation, sign language transliteration or oral transliteration services in academic classes required for the completion of degree requirements and other academic settings. Academic settings include but are not limited to: lectures, discussions, laboratory sections, tutorial sessions, meetings and campus-wide public ceremonial events e.g. New Student Convocation, graduation exercises; and events sponsored by other UCSB departments. As appropriate: Interpret from spoken English into American Sign Language (ASL) and from ASL into spoken English. Works in collaboration with department staff, co-workers, students, and faculty to develop knowledge of technical vocabulary and to maximize the effectiveness of the interpreting program. Works in collaboration with the students to develop knowledge of technical vocabulary and to understand concepts in their fields of study. Continually tracks and maintains preparation materials and resources as needed for the job. Serves as the second interpreter in a team. Tracks technical vocabulary/signs for classes interpreted for a resource manual. Provides other campus interpreting duties such as lectures, meetings, conferences, events, etc. as needed.

    * Knowledge of Issues & Training - 20%: Attend professional workshops in the field of interpreting and maintain CEUs for certification. Prepares in advance for all meetings, classes, activities. Maintain knowledge of issues related to Educational Interpreting/Transliterating/Team Development. Reviews relevant course information. Confer with instructors, teaching assistants, deaf and hard-of-hearing students, and team members to develop and transcribe sign vocabulary for technical content areas. Keeps abreast of Educational Interpreting issues, Deaf culture and technical, educational sign vocabulary. Continues to develop knowledge in the field of educational interpreting in Higher Education settings and to attain higher levels of certification. Gains familiarity and develops a working knowledge of the logistics of interpreting/transliterating; lighting, positioning, technical media areas and captioning. Participates in staff meetings to discuss issues related to the field and to the provision of support services to deaf and hard-of-hearing students. Maintains records of preparation, interpreting, tracking vocabulary and time sheets. Acts in accordance with UC Policies and Federal and State laws regarding services to students with disabilities with regard to confidentiality.
