Transportation Director directs, develops, and implements overall operations of a transportation network including safety, compliance, equipment, and staff. Develops and directs operational policies and procedures to ensure safety and efficiency in all transportation activities. Being a Transportation Director monitors transportation costs, service level agreements, and performance metrics to identify and resolve problems and achieve efficiencies. Partners with internal and external stakeholders to forecast and meet capacity needs. Additionally, Transportation Director oversees the acquisition and oversight of transportation providers. Requires a bachelor's degree in logistics, transportation, supply chain management, or equivalent. Typically reports to top management. The Transportation Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be a Transportation Director typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.     About WSDOT
    Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated, multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state. In addition to building, maintaining, and operating the state highway system, WSDOT operates the largest ferry system in the nation, manages the world's longest floating bridge, and recently completed the world's widest tunneling project.

    The Opportunity
    WSDOT is currently seeking a Transportation Technician (In -Training) in the Burlington area. This position supports the WSDOT mission by assisting the Burlington Project Engineering Office (PEO) project team through design development, contract development, and construction management of highway improvement and preservation projects. This position prepares and reviews plans & cost estimates, performs topographic surveys, and performs other basic engineering tasks. This position helps ensure that highway construction projects are designed, constructed, and administered in compliance with agency policies, procedures, and practices. This position is critical in fostering a respectful and healthy work environment with focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion.
    Note: This position includes an approved in-training plan; therefore, it may be filled at the Transportation Technician 1, 2 or 3 level. The salaries for these classifications are as follows:
    Transportation Technician 1: $43,428 - $58,104 annually depending on qualifications.
    Transportation Technician 2: $52,620 - $70,800 annually depending on qualifications.
    Transportation Technician 3: $59,616 - $80,112 annually depending on qualifications.

    What to Expect
    Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the TT3 will:


    • Perform a variety of semi-skilled project development support tasks, manually or by using computer assisted design/drafting equipment.
    • Draft and/or revise plans, details, base maps, vicinity maps, contour maps, profiles, etc.
    • Compute and plot cross sections, alignment, roadway sections; uses calculator and/or computer to calculate or check calculations for cuts, fills, areas, quantities, elevations, grades, coordinates, and curves.
    • Transport survey equipment weighing up to 40 lbs. to and from job sites while traversing uneven terrain in adverse weather conditions.
    • Sets up and operates a level, rod, prism poles, and targets on survey projects.
    • Drive a WSDOT assigned vehicle to and from the work area.
    Qualifications
    An ideal candidate for the Transportation Technician 1 position will have:
    • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent

    An ideal candidate for the Transportation Technician 2 position will have:
    • An Associate degree in Civil Engineering Technology, surveying, drafting or other closely related fields.
    OR
    • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent and two (2) years of experience performing basic technical engineering work as a Transportation Technician 1 or equivalent.
    OR
    • Three (3) years of experience as a Highway Maintenance Worker or equivalent.

    An ideal candidate for the Transportation Technician 3 position will have:
    • Two (2) years of experience performing semi-skilled technical engineering work as a Transportation Technician 2 or equivalent.
    OR
    • A Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (BSCE) or related field
    OR
    • Certification as an Engineer-In-Training (EIT)

    In addition to:
    • Valid driver’s license
    • Ability to transport equipment/items weighing up to 40 pounds, over steep or uneven terrain.
    • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions and next to live traffic in closed roadway lanes.
    • Must be able to perform mathematical calculations at or above a high school geometry level.
    • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite Software (i.e., Word, Exel, Outlook, etc.)
    • Ability to work for extended periods at a desk while performing office functions.
    • Experience using CAD or have the ability to learn to use CAD within six months of hiring.
    • Ability to work all shifts, including evening, nights, weekends, and overtime as needed.
    • Communicate complex concepts clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing.
    • Ability to learn and then apply engineering concepts, principles, and WSDOT standard procedures to develop Plans, Specifications and Estimates (PS&E) and inspect and administer highway construction projects.

    It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
    • Experience with Bentley CADD products including Microstation and InRoads.
    • Experience as a rodman, conducting topographic surveys.
