Transportation Director directs, develops, and implements overall operations of a transportation network including safety, compliance, equipment, and staff. Develops and directs operational policies and procedures to ensure safety and efficiency in all transportation activities. Being a Transportation Director monitors transportation costs, service level agreements, and performance metrics to identify and resolve problems and achieve efficiencies. Partners with internal and external stakeholders to forecast and meet capacity needs. Additionally, Transportation Director oversees the acquisition and oversight of transportation providers. Requires a bachelor's degree in logistics, transportation, supply chain management, or equivalent. Typically reports to top management. The Transportation Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be a Transportation Director typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.   • Our government client is currently looking for a Director of Transportation to join their team. They are seeking a highly motivated individual with great attention to detail. The Director of Transportation provides oversight and strategic direction for all activities in the Transportation Department, including Operations, Planning, and Fleet Maintenance functions. This includes: 1) oversight of staff managing daily operations of Fixed Route and Demand-Response transportation operations, including route planning, scheduling, dispatching, fleet management, safety, training, and regulatory compliance; 2) oversight of planning activities and staff, and 3) oversight of staff managing fleet maintenance functions.

    Responsibilities:

    • Leads the transportation department, ensuring consistency with transit authority's strategic plans while defining and executing the transit authority's operational goals.
    • Serves as a member of the management team, establishing priorities and strategic plans for the organization and developing long- and short-term plans and objectives.
    • Monitors performance and analyzes current practices and data in order to meet organizational goals and identify opportunities for improvement.
    • Negotiates third-party operations and maintenance contracts.
    • Proactively provides accurate, appropriate and timely information regarding operations performance with internal and external stakeholders, including the Board of Directors, the Executive Director, the Leadership Team, and other departments.
    • Identifies the short- and long-term needs of the department to meet organizationally agreed upon levels of quality of service and communicates these throughout the organization; develops targeted programs to improve problem areas.
    • Develops recommendations and assists in preparing departmental budgets for operations, capital, planning, fleet, safety and facility maintenance projects. Responsible for overall budget adherence.
    • Monitors and suggests adjustments to the Operations, Safety and Fleet budgets.
    • Drives the development and implementation of Department policies, procedures, and service plans related to operations, planning, and fleet maintenance.
    • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations governing public transportation, including safety standards and ADA requirements.
    • Manages the work of the Planning Manager and promotes effective coordination and alignment between the planning and operations teams.
    • Manages the Fleet Asset Supervisor, assisting with optimization of the use of the transit fleet, including maintenance, procurement, and retirement of vehicles.
    •  Provides guidance, support, and mentorship to Department personnel, encouraging high performance and accountability.
    • Collaborates with internal departments, external stakeholders, and community partners to enhance transit services and address customer needs.
    • Prepares and presents reports, proposals, and recommendations to senior management and governing bodies.
    • Observes safety and security procedures, uses equipment and materials safely and reports potentially unsafe conditions.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Education and Experience Required:

    • Bachelor's degree in Transportation Management, Public Administration, Business Administration, or related field.
    • Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in public transportation, including at least 4 years in a supervisory or managerial role.
    • Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively interact with diverse stakeholders.
    • Proven track record of strategic planning, project management, and problem-solving.
    • Experience working with government agencies, community groups, and public officials is highly desirable.
    • Certification from relevant professional associations (e.g., CTAA, APTA) is a plus.
