SUMMARY:
The Director of Transportation organizes, supervises, and directs the pupil transportation program, as well as, supervises the comprehensive operation of school buses and pupil transportation including supervision of all employees, fiscal integrity, and human relation skills. This position will develop and maintain a safe and efficient transportation system which allows the student to take full advantage of the complete range of curricular and extra-curricular activities offered by the schools of the district. This position will work closely with the schools and necessary departments, to meet their needs in a quality and highly efficient manner. This position will develop and promote good community relations among community and school clientele.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s degree in business or related area, or Bachelor’s degree with commensurate experience accepted.
- Minimum of three years of experience in business administration and management.
- Minimum of five years' experience in transportation.
- Valid Colorado driver license
- Commercial driver’s license (CDL) with PS2 endorsement required or within 4 weeks after hire.
- Criminal background check required for hire.

- Extensive knowledge of state and federal rules and regulations regarding commercial drivers, school bus transportation, vehicle safety standards, transporting students with disabilities and drug and alcohol testing.
- Intermediate to advanced knowledge of vehicle maintenance; automated routing programs; and Microsoft Excel, Work and Access applications.
- Ability to perform duties independently.
- Ability to work hours outside of a typical workday.
- Observes all District policies and procedures.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES & EXPECTATIONS: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Develops and administers a transportation program to meet all requirements of the daily instructional program and extra-curricular activities.
- Update and maintain student transportation information within the Student Information System.
- Utilize the Parent Notification System to send alerts concerning changes in routes, etc.
- Administers the preparation of bus routes and schedules for all schools in the district.
- Recruits, trains, and supervises all transportation personnel and makes recommendations related to employment, transfer, promotion, and release.
- Administers the maintenance of all district-owned vehicles and develops plans for preventive maintenance.
- Authorizes purchases in accordance with budgetary limitations and district procedures.
- Maintains safety standards to conform to state, federal, and insurance regulations, and develops a school bus safety program for the district.
- Cooperates with school principals and others responsible for planning special school trips.
- Reports discipline problems occurring on school buses to the appropriate building administrator.
- Works with appropriate personnel in solving recurring transportation-related problems.
- Develops recommendations for future equipment and personnel needs based on the enrollment projections and school grade configurations, including transportation for students in special programs.
- Acts as liaison to parents for complaints and special requests.
- Conforms to all state and federal laws and regulations and submits required reports regarding school transportation.
- Generates and supervises all written communication that represents the transportation department. Work with employees to establish processes to assess needs and identify plans and procedures to improve driver and department performances.
- Work collaboratively with the Superintendent and the Director of Risk Management in the development of procedures and recommendations for school delays and or closures during emergencies and/or inclement weather.
- Communicate with the Department of Special Education to provide reasonable, safe transportation services in compliance with Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Free and Appropriate Education (FAPE).
- Intermediate to advanced knowledge of developing, monitoring and coordinating a budget.
- Ability to promote and follow Board of Education policies, Superintendent policies, building and department procedures.
- Ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilize appropriate safety equipment and report unsafe conditions to the appropriate administrator.
