Transportation Director directs, develops, and implements overall operations of a transportation network including safety, compliance, equipment, and staff. Develops and directs operational policies and procedures to ensure safety and efficiency in all transportation activities. Being a Transportation Director monitors transportation costs, service level agreements, and performance metrics to identify and resolve problems and achieve efficiencies. Partners with internal and external stakeholders to forecast and meet capacity needs. Additionally, Transportation Director oversees the acquisition and oversight of transportation providers. Requires a bachelor's degree in logistics, transportation, supply chain management, or equivalent. Typically reports to top management. The Transportation Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be a Transportation Director typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.     ABOUT THE POSITION

    Director of Transportation | Wethersfield, CT

     

    VHB has an exciting opening for a Director of Transportation, responsible for leading the day-to-day operations of the transportation department; fostering a positive, collaborative environment; and advancing VHB’s Generational Company philosophy, core values, brand, and strategic vision. The Transportation department currently consists of approximately 25 engineers and designers from multiple disciplines including highway design, traffic operations and safety, structures, and transit and rail.

    The Director of Tranportation’s role is to strengthen our OneVHB culture by building local prominence through continuous growth of the team and collaborate closely with the Managing Director and office leadership team.

     

    Responsibilities:

    • Motivate and Lead a High Performing Team: Develop, engage, and foster the growth of VHB employees on your team; recruit, retain, and develop VHB's best and brightest; provide encouragement and regular feedback; and serve as a role model for all levels of the team.
    • Manage the Career Conversation program within your department and ensure that the program is executed in accordance with the guidance and within the established schedule (annual career conversations with mid-year check-ins).
    • Coordinate with the Managing Director to inform the Focal Point and Incentive Compensation processes for employees within your department.
    • Conduct regular team meetings to discuss workload, pursuits, visibility, general team happenings, and overall performance/future direction of your department.
    • Proactively identify staffing, recruiting, training, and hiring needs, and onboard new employees in collaboration with the Managing Director, Market/Service Leaders, and HR, as appropriate.
    • Ensure that Project/Task Managers understand and apply appropriate health and safety policies so that all employees have a safe work environment in the office and in the field.
    • Actively support and participate in office-wide meetings and social gatherings such as Town Halls, Milestones, summer outings, holiday celebrations, team building events, and other activities.

    Develop New Business and Foster Client Relationships:

    • Lead the pursuit of client development (CTDOT) opportunities consistent with the annual Business Plan and VHB's Strategic Plan, in collaboration with your Managing Director and Regional Market and Service Leaders, as appropriate.
    • Provide input to the Managing Director for an annual business development action plan to develop client relationships, win work, and fill the pipeline.
    • Make recommendations for go/no-go and partnering decisions on pursuits.
    • Develop, monitor, and regularly update a list of key pursuits expected over the next 6-12 months.
    • Participate in local organizational activities to promote VHB visibility within the community.

    Drive Operational Performance:

    • Actively manage the financial performance of your department.
    • Collaborate with the Managing Director to create and deliver an annual growth-oriented Business Plan.
    • Actively manage your department’s workload to meet or exceed group’s utilization target.
    • Monitor backlog relative to team size and the Business Plan, oversee the development of workload plans for your teams, and proactively identify potential work-sharing opportunities.
    • Play an active role in monthly financial review meetings for your group to manage financial expectations, support client relations, and discuss project creation opportunities.
    • Drive quality within the group and ensure that QA/QC processes are implemented.

    Qualifications

    • 15 years of professional experience required
    • 4 years’ experience working on CTDOT projects
    • CT PE license required
    • Experience managing a high performing team
    • BS in Civil Engineering required, Masters degree a plus
    • Experience completing transportation studies, design reports, final design documents and developing contract plans, in conformity with accepted engineering standards and procedures including AASHTO & DOT
