Transportation Director directs, develops, and implements overall operations of a transportation network including safety, compliance, equipment, and staff. Develops and directs operational policies and procedures to ensure safety and efficiency in all transportation activities. Being a Transportation Director monitors transportation costs, service level agreements, and performance metrics to identify and resolve problems and achieve efficiencies. Partners with internal and external stakeholders to forecast and meet capacity needs. Additionally, Transportation Director oversees the acquisition and oversight of transportation providers. Requires a bachelor's degree in logistics, transportation, supply chain management, or equivalent. Typically reports to top management. The Transportation Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be a Transportation Director typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.   • Purpose Statement

    The job of Director of Transportation is done for the purpose/s of leading and directing student transportation programs and services for the school district; ensuring the efficient and safe operation of the department; overseeing the scheduling of bus routes, and the maintenance of buses; ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations; and managing a team of bus drivers and support staff.


    This job reports to Chief Operations Officer


    Essential Functions

    • Assesses incidents, complaints and/or accidents for the purpose of reaching and/or recommending a resolution.
    • Coordinates student transportation activities with school officials, department heads, staff, students and parents, and other internal and external groups or individuals for the purpose of ensuring that district transportation needs are met.
    • Directs department operations cost controls and efficiency, customer service and communication to stakeholders, as well as the implementation of new programs and/or processes for the purpose of providing services within established timeframes and in compliance with related requirements.
    • Facilitates meetings that may frequently involve a range of issues (e.g. personnel actions, financial procedures, regulatory requirements, interdepartmental needs, etc.) for the purpose of identifying appropriate actions, developing recommendations, supporting other staff, and serving as a district representative.
    • Manages the transportation department performance (e.g. on-time metrics, accident tracking, driver recruitment and retention, fleet maintenance, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe, efficient and effective operations.
    • Manages the yellow fleet, develops strategies for bus replacement, and oversees the maintenance and upkeep of existing fleet for the purpose of ensuring that vehicles are fully functioning.
    • Participates in meetings, workshops and seminars for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions.
    • Performs personnel administrative functions (e.g. hiring, training, supervising, evaluating, coaching, providing professional development opportunities, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining adequate staffing, enhancing productivity of personnel and ensuring department/program outcomes are achieved.
    • Provides job related training opportunities for drivers, bus monitors, mechanics, dispatchers/routers and/or driver trainers for the purpose of ensuring their job success and compliance with State and Federal guidelines and mandates.
    • Researches and prepares a wide variety of data and materials (e.g. reports, analysis, boundary maps,transportation budget, route report, state reporting, complaints, potential new routes, schedules, new equipments and/or materials, bus policies, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities and issues, meeting compliance requirements, providing audit references, providing supporting materials for requested actions. and ensuring compliance with organization policies and procedures.
    • Supervises department functions (e.g. hiring/termination recommendations, coordinating transportation staff training activities, managing department budget, approving purchase orders, advising, consulting, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that the department functions in a safe and efficient manner.

    • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

    Work Environment

    The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some climbing and balancing, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and some fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 60% sitting, 20% walking, 20% standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and in a generally hazard free environment.
