Transportation Director directs, develops, and implements overall operations of a transportation network including safety, compliance, equipment, and staff. Develops and directs operational policies and procedures to ensure safety and efficiency in all transportation activities. Being a Transportation Director monitors transportation costs, service level agreements, and performance metrics to identify and resolve problems and achieve efficiencies. Partners with internal and external stakeholders to forecast and meet capacity needs. Additionally, Transportation Director oversees the acquisition and oversight of transportation providers. Requires a bachelor's degree in logistics, transportation, supply chain management, or equivalent. Typically reports to top management. The Transportation Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be a Transportation Director typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.     Position Summary:


    The Director of Operations ensures the achievement of the organization’s core strategies and operating results by providing leadership to the Operation Managers, Communication Manager, and Supervisors. This position is responsible for overall direction, planning, implementation, and maintenance of both Emergency Medical Services and routine transport services to communities and facilities served by AASI while providing high quality, cost-effective service. The Director of Operations must promote the Team Concept Approach to Management in order to effectively command Operations.

    Work Functions & Responsibilities:

    • Ensures proper management (EMS Supervisors, Associate Supervisors, etc.) and staff coverage to meet daily projected ambulance runs. Works with team members in scheduling to ensure adequate team member coverage.
    • Reviews daily, or confers with subordinates who have, all operational reports, supervisory logs, information reports, vehicle maintenance logs, and other paperwork. Audits for exceptions, problems and investigates causes and results.
    • Responds to senior management inquiries regarding EMS performance. Conducts own fact-finding and reports findings as well as corrective action.
    • Assumes responsibility for command of AASI personnel at scene of major emergency.
    • Acts as liaison with designated local fire and police, state police, and other authorities.
    • Engages dispatch center staff in assuring proper response and non-emergency.
    • Maintains standard operating policies, procedures and guidelines for services, personnel, equipment, and vehicles. Modifies, adds, deletes as needed and as approved by senior management. Confirms timely and accurate implementation, personnel training and compliance.
    • Maintains and tracks pertinent operations statistical data for review by senior management.
    • Directs, coordinates or performs all management in-service training. The Director also plans and conducts the bi-weekly Management meetings.
    • The Director of Operations has the responsibility for annual State Inspections and subsequent Service and Vehicle licensing for Connecticut.
    • Prepare and issue assessments to team members and operations managers.
    • Utilize Operative IQ system to maintain all EMS inventory and oversee all operational supply purchasing and appropriate budgeting.
    • Act as procurement officer, meeting, monitoring, and maintaining EMS vendor relationships to ensure best pricing.
    • Oversee coaching, guidance, corrective action, and/or termination for team members and EMS management in conjunction with Human Resources for appropriateness and fairness of progressive corrective action.
    • Attend monthly community EMS agency meetings.
    • Monitor outside contracts with Griswold, Ledyard, and Foxwoods.
    • Monitor and oversee the daily facility needs of each base location and work with the facilities team on basic maintenance, upkeep and cleanliness of each facility.
    • Assumes overall responsibility for the certification and/or licensing of current and new employees.
    • Monitors and coordinates recertification of PALS & ACLS trainings for team members.
