DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Plans and directs transportation of regular and special education students safely to and from school.
- Acts directly as the manager of all operations within the department.
- Directly Supervises the Transportation Supervisors, and through them the School Bus Drivers and Bus Attendants.
- Acts as Director in the absence of the Director.
- Reviews and approves all bus routes and trips for student transportation and prepares news releases as necessary for the dissemination of this information.
- Assigns all school bus drivers and Attendants to routes.
- Assists in Preparing and administering the budget for student transportation.
- Assists in Preparing and expedites legislative measures for the improvement of student transportation.
- Assists in determining the no-transport zone for each school.
- Provides assistance to principals in planning walking routes to school. Surveys the walking routes to schools.
- Serves as a liaison with the Hampton City Public Works Department and Hampton Police Department on matters pertaining to the safe and expeditious movement of students to and from school.
- Investigates school bus accidents involving serious injury and/or property damage.
- Screens the driving and criminal records of all school bus driver trainees who will drive for the school system. Chairs pre-employment interview panels for all applicant for bus driver and bus attendant Positions in the Department.
- Assists the director in Preparing for the Virginia "Annual Report of Pupil Transportation at Public Expense," which applies to all aspects of public transportation of Hampton City Public Schools students.
- Receives and handles inquiries and complaints and other communication related to student transportation and keeps director informed of developing situations requiring his involvement.
- Assists in providing intra-school transportation where necessary.
- Performs related work as required.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree required, preferably in transportation or business management or related field.
- Five (5) years of experience in student transportation or management required.
- Comprehensive and broad knowledge of the principles and practices of administration of school transportation.
- Thorough knowledge of principles and practices of accounting, financial management, and contract management.
- Ability to plan, to organize, and to direct a comprehensive school transportation program.
- Ability to directly work through subordinate supervisors.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to resolve parents, schools, administrators and/or employees complaints about transportation and related issues.
- Good organizational, human relations, and communication skills.
