Transportation Director directs, develops, and implements overall operations of a transportation network including safety, compliance, equipment, and staff. Develops and directs operational policies and procedures to ensure safety and efficiency in all transportation activities. Being a Transportation Director monitors transportation costs, service level agreements, and performance metrics to identify and resolve problems and achieve efficiencies. Partners with internal and external stakeholders to forecast and meet capacity needs. Additionally, Transportation Director oversees the acquisition and oversight of transportation providers. Requires a bachelor's degree in logistics, transportation, supply chain management, or equivalent. Typically reports to top management. The Transportation Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be a Transportation Director typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.     The Challenge
    We are looking for an experienced transportation worker to join our Davidson County Maintenance team.
     
    In this role, you will:
      • Perform progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of State Maintained roads and road features.
      • Install pipes and perform shoulder and ditch maintenance.
      • Perform asphalt pavement repair.
      • Install traffic control and erosion control devices.
      • Operate construction equipment, including hand, and power tools.
      • Respond to emergency situations including traffic accidents, snow and ice removal, and other emergencies.
      • Operate equipment, such as a backhoe, track hoe, track loader, skid steer, and dump truck.
      • Transport inmates for work details.
     
    What You Bring
      • Knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices.
      • Experience in 1 of the following:  shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, or asphalt patching.
      • Demonstrated ability to supervise and train others in equipment operations and directing work crew daily activities.
      • Experience in snow and ice removal operations.
      • Experience in the operation of at 2 pieces of the following equipment:  backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer, or sweeper.
      • Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
      • Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement. (Still apply if you don't have this yet. You can get it through our on-the-job training program within 360 days of hire.)
      •   Safety toe shoes.
      
    Notes
      • You will be subject to outside extreme environmental conditions, in addition to hazards at highway construction sites, including heavy equipment and highway traffic.
      • An inmate card approved by the NC Department of Public Safety must be issued to NCDOT employees to transport inmates. In order to obtain an inmate card you must undergo a criminal history check, complete necessary training and orientation, and be at least 21 years old.
      • We will conduct a pre-employment criminal history check, drug test, and check with your employers over the past 3 years for alcohol/drug abuse.
     
    Education & Experience
      • High school/GED diploma, and
      • 5 years of relevant experience; or
      • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
