The Challenge
We are looking for a Senior Engineer III to join our Work Zone Traffic Control team as a Project Design Engineer.
In this role, you will:
- Lead the development and oversight of Transportation Management Plans (TMPs) for diverse projects and traffic control-related special assignments.
- Assist our Project Engineer in reviewing consultant submittals and in-house designs of all engineers working in the squad.
- Lead the scoping, negotiating, scheduling, and oversight of outsourced design projects performed by Private Engineering Firms (PEF’s).
- Coordinate closely with NCDOT Design teams, field divisions, consultants, and public agencies.
- Guide designers in Construction process sequencing, determining Traffic Management strategies, and traffic operational/Road User Costs Analysis to ensure a safe work zone for all users and construction staff.
- Coordinate with all stakeholders to ensure constructability of the design, safety, and mobility of all users and contractor’s productivity.
- Assist field engineers to mitigate impacts during construction.
- Review and submit Transportation Management Plans supporting NCDOT’s Project Delivery initiative.
- Attend field inspections and meetings at construction sites/field offices.
- Answer technical questions and provide solutions to problems arising during construction to ensure project completion schedules are maintained.
- Perform work zone safety audits.
What You Bring
- Transportation Management Plan/Temporary Traffic Control Design experience.
- Experience with plan submittal reviews from subordinates or consultants.
- Roadway and/or Structural Plans used for Highway Construction Projects experience.
- Experience with labor cost estimates for outsourced Transportation Management Plans (TMP’s) or other plans used for Highway Construction.
- Computer skills using MicroStation or comparable CADD software.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, and
- 4 years of relevant experience; or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.

- We may require you to be registered as a professional engineer by the NC Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
