Tumor Registrar identifies, registers, and maintains records of all cancer patients using tumor registry systems and software. Prepares abstracts and performs coding of clinical patient data related to cancer. Being a Tumor Registrar performs data analysis and provides reports used by researchers, physicians, institutions, and patients. Adheres to all coding and privacy policies, guidelines, and regulations. Additionally, Tumor Registrar may require an associate degree or equivalent. Requires Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) credential. May require Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) certification. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Tumor Registrar works independently within established procedures associated with the specific job function. Has gained proficiency in multiple competencies relevant to the job.     Under the direction of the Cancer Center Coordinator and/or Administrator, the Certified Tumor Registrar performs data management and analysis in the Cancer Registry in accordance with Lahey Clinic Medical Center policy and procedures, American College of Surgeons (ACoS) program requirements, Massachusetts Department of Public Health State Cancer Registry requirements. Abstracts and assures continued follow-up of all patients diagnosed as having a malignant neoplasm, using the reportable list by the State Cancer Registry.
    A Certified Tumor Registrar contributes to the operation of the registry, and views the registry as part of an overall cancer program. The Certified Tumor Registrar performs statistical analysis on registry data and presents reports. The CTR performs Quality Assurance of registry data.

    Job Description:

    Essential Duties & Responsibilities including but not limited to: 
    1.    Demonstrates full working knowledge of the cancer program Standards of the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer; Facility Oncology Registry Data Standards; International Classification of Diseases for Oncology, 3rd Edition; American Joint Committee on Cancer Staging Manual, 6th Edition; and Collaborative Staging and Coding Manual.
    2.    Produces an electronic abstract for each patient diagnosed and/or treated at Lahey Clinic for cancer according to the Reportable List of diagnoses approved annually by the Lahey Cancer Committee. Reviews medical records to determine primary anatomic site, stage at time of diagnosis, histology and other pertinent information. Documents modes of treatment and therapy.
    3.    Prepares staging/QA packets containing appropriate information on diagnosis and/or treatment, including imaging, pathology, op notes, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. Thorough knowledge of Lahey Clinic internal applications, including LCMC, IDX and Meditech.
    4.    Communicates effectively with managers, colleagues and medical staff to resolve abstracting and follow-up questions; communicates effectively with the ACoS Inquiry & Response system
    5.    Updates an electronic follow-up system.  Obtains from the hospital database the status of disease, and/or initiates correspondence with treating physicians, other registrars, town clerks or the patient. 
    6.    Demonstrates working knowledge of IMPAC/MRS Cancer Registry System to produce reports and perform data analysis on cancer patients in the Lahey Clinic database.
    7.    Produces and presents statistical reports for review by the medical staff, cancer committee and the American College of Surgeons.
    8.    Works in collaboration with the Director and Program Coordinator to prepare the Survey Application Report.
    9.    Attends Lahey Clinic tumor conferences, education seminars, and other meetings as appropriate.
    10.    Maintains National Cancer Registrars’ Association Certified Tumor Registrar certification by earning the appropriate number of CEUs.
    11.    Incorporates Lahey Clinic Guiding Principles, Mission Statement and Goals  into daily activities.
    12.    Complies with all Lahey Clinic Policies with emphasis on preserving patient confidentiality according to Lahey and HIPAA guidelines. 
    13.    Complies with behavioral expectations of the department and Lahey Clinic.
    14.    Maintains courteous and effective interactions with colleagues and patients.
     

    Minimum Qualifications: 

    Education:  Associates Degree.

    Licensure, Certification, Registration: Certified Tumor Registrar preferred.  

    Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:  Strong organizational and communication skills, ability to function independently and to devise creative ways of obtaining information, knowledge of medical terminology and medical practice, ability to interact with professional personnel at all levels, knowledge of computer databases and knowledge of computer word processing systems.  In the absence of any of these skills, demonstrates the ability to be thoroughly trained to meet organizational standards. 

    Experience 3 years of research study experience or data management experience.
