Tumor Registrar identifies, registers, and maintains records of all cancer patients using tumor registry systems and software. Prepares abstracts and performs coding of clinical patient data related to cancer. Being a Tumor Registrar performs data analysis and provides reports used by researchers, physicians, institutions, and patients. Adheres to all coding and privacy policies, guidelines, and regulations. Additionally, Tumor Registrar may require an associate degree or equivalent. Requires Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) credential. May require Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) certification. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Tumor Registrar works independently within established procedures associated with the specific job function. Has gained proficiency in multiple competencies relevant to the job. The phlebotomist/registrar will be required to perform procedures to include venipuncture, capillary puncture, and bedside testing. The phlebotomist/registrar is also responsible for accurate patient identification and proper labeling of specimens at the bedside. The phlebotomist must also be able to communicate with patients, doctors, and other hospital staff. As registrar, will perform duties necessary to ensure accurate and timely registration of all patients accessing the laboratory patient service center.
A. Education:
High School graduate or equivalent preferred. Completion of a phlebotomy training course or on the job training with at least one year of phlebotomy experience in a CAP certified hospital laboratory preferred. CPR certification required, PBT (ASCP), CPT (ASCP) or equivalent preferred.
Prior experience in medical field preferred. Knowledge of but not limited to admitting/registration process, receivables management, credit and collection laws, billing forms, medical billing regulations, insurance benefit calculations, HMO/PPO contracts, third party funding resources.
B. Job Knowledge:
Must have a thorough understanding of Clinical Laboratory procedures.
General knowledge of medical business office practices. Strong communication skills. Basic understanding of business application software. Ability to maintain calm temperament under stressful conditions. Good math skills, deductive reasoning and general office machine operations.
Unusual Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
A. Requires ability to lift and move boxes of supplies weighing up to 30 pounds.
B. Job requires extended periods of standing, walking, and use of stairway.
C. Job involves exposure to bio-hazardous materials, chemicals, and potential infectious diseases.
D. Extended periods of sitting, extensive data entry, possible exposure to patients with infectious disease.
