Tumor Registrar identifies, registers, and maintains records of all cancer patients using tumor registry systems and software. Prepares abstracts and performs coding of clinical patient data related to cancer. Being a Tumor Registrar performs data analysis and provides reports used by researchers, physicians, institutions, and patients. Adheres to all coding and privacy policies, guidelines, and regulations. Additionally, Tumor Registrar may require an associate degree or equivalent. Requires Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) credential. May require Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) certification. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Tumor Registrar works independently within established procedures associated with the specific job function. Has gained proficiency in multiple competencies relevant to the job.     General Summary

    The DCI cares for over 10,000 cancer patients from every state in the nation, every county in North Carolina, and from overseas. DCI is a National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated comprehensive cancer center – one of only 45 in the nation. More than 300 researchers and physicians and 500 clinical staff are affiliated with Duke Cancer Institute. In 2012, DCI opened a new, state-of-the-art, cancer center encompassing 267,000 square feet. The DCI is dedicated to a streamlined multidisciplinary approach to cancer care. Since 1993, Duke has ranked among the top centers in the nation for cancer services according to US News & World Report.

     

    Work Performed

     

    Abstract a wide range of medical data from the EMR and code it in compliance with data standard sets established by the (ACoS) (CoC) and the (NCCCR). This includes:

    • Medical History physical findings, screening information, occupation and any history of a previous cancer;

    • Diagnostic Findings types, dates, and results of procedures used to diagnose cancer; Cancer Identification primary site, cell type, and extent of disease;

    • Cancer Treatment surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormone, or immunotherapy;

    • Patient Identification age, gender, race/ethnicity, birthplace and residence; Outcomes annual follow-up information regarding patient status, recurrence and treatment.

    • Maintain a thorough understanding of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology disease processes, surgical and radiation techniques, new chemo and hormone drugs, through participation in continuing education programs to effectively apply ICD-O, FORDS, AJCC, and SEER coding guidelines to inpatient and outpatient diagnoses and procedures.

    • All coding is correlated from supporting clinical documentation in the EMR. CTR's also participate in the development of coding policies and procedures as identified as well as independently research and solve complex coding problems and assist with special projects as required. In addition, to coding topography, morphology, and stage of disease,

    • CTR's also ensure adherence to data management protocols as set forth in state and national requirements, departmental standards and guidelines set forth by the DCI Cancer Committee.

    • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

     

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education

     

    An Associate's Degree (in CRM or CIM preferred) is required for those certified on or after 2015 the requirement.

     

    Experience

    Due to the complexity of the cancer cases seen at Duke, at least two years of experience working as a CTR in a Hospital or Central Tumor Registry is required. Prefer 5 years of experience as a CTR.

     

    Degrees, Licensures, Certifications

     

    Certified Tumor Registrar certification is required.

     

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

     

    • Proficient in Facility Oncology Registry Data Standards (FORDS), ICD-O Coding, AJCC TNM, Collaborative Staging and Surveillance

    • Epidemiology, End Results (SEER) staging, multiple primary and histology coding

    • Excellent organizational skills with good follow through, investigative/analytic skills with detail orientation.

    • Ability to achieve productivity goals under pressure. Good verbal and written communication skills.

    • Working knowledge of Metriq Registry software, Windows-based software and EPIC EMR.
