Ultrasound Technologist operates ultrasonic equipment to produce images of the body's organs and tissues for diagnostic purposes. Performs sonographic examinations to locate, evaluate and record critical functional, pathological, and anatomical data. Being an Ultrasound Technologist records test results, inspects and maintains equipment, and orders supplies when needed. May require an associate degree in a related area. Additionally, Ultrasound Technologist typically requires completion of an accredited program in Medical Sonography. May require registration with the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) and/or certification from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). May require a state license to practice. Typically reports to a chief technologist or manager. The Ultrasound Technologist occasionally directed in several aspects of the work. The primary purpose of the Ultrasound Technologist provides health care services for inpatients and outpatients of the University Hospital/DOC through the applications of non-ionizing radiation (in the form of ultrasound). The technologist performs general, OB/GYN, vascular ultrasound procedures for the interpretation of a licensed practitioner. The patient population ranges from newborn to maturity. Exercise professional judgment throughout the performance of his/her duties and maintains a demeanor that supports the values and mission of the department, ensuring that all interaction with patients, physicians, nurses, administrators, and other members of the hospital staff are professional and in accordance with the established guidelines of the institution.
Must be a graduate of an approved Ultrasound Program. ARDMS certification required, and current active registration required. Annual fit testing required. Must maintain valid certification by the American Heart Association in Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR.
