Underwriting Manager manages daily operations of the underwriting process. Implements underwriting strategy and operational policies for product lines. Being an Underwriting Manager oversees the review and approval process for decisions and recommendations related to complex cases. Defines and establishes procedures for risk criteria, application and renewal, and acceptance and rejection. Additionally, Underwriting Manager develops underwriting team expertise with coaching, support and educational programs. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a senior manager. The Underwriting Manager manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. Position Purpose Under general oversight, support the administration of the company’s underwriting structure. Underwrite and monitor accounts and account lines. Develop and execute a marketing plan. Perform and monitor the risk analysis. Analyze, evaluate, accept, decline, rate, quote, and bind new submissions. Has greater ownership and accountability over the review of complex sources of profit and selecting appropriate risks. Principal Duties & Responsibilities Analyze, evaluate, accept, decline, rate, quote, and bind new or renewal submissions with high premium or risk exposure. Build strong relationships between agents, reinsurers, and contacts. Review complex submissions, account losses, pricing models, and profitable premiums. Review complex sources of profit by selecting appropriate risks. Assist with special projects or other duties as needed. Education & Experience Typically requires a bachelor's degree in insurance, finance, risk management, business or a related field Minimum of 7 years of related experience for consideration [OR] equivalent level of education and experience Knowledge, Skills, & Competencies Ability to know proper sign off & correct UW judgement in most cases. Possess a thorough understanding of the internal processes of the product and displayed understanding of loss rating/credibility. Working toward building and maintaining a profitable book of business. Consistent display of complete/organized files at audits and documentation is at a level that judgement/pricing is easily understood by anyone’s review.
