The Hesburgh Libraries of Notre Dame is looking for an energetic, customer focused library professional to join our team in the role of User Services Library Assistant. This position works as part of the User Services Program, providing research and library service support to the faculty, staff and students of the University community. This position is heavily cross-trained across the operations of three User Services Units: Document Delivery & Stacks, Circulation Services, and Interlibrary Loan & Reserves.
The ideal candidate for this position will demonstrate the ability to work with the public in a fast paced, demanding, customer service environment and will have extensive knowledge of academic library practices and procedures.

Duties include:
Document Delivery & Stacks: This position processes a high volume of transactionsfor both physical and electronic items. Effectively utilizes the integrated library management system(Aleph), the Interlibrary Loan system (ILLiad), and the Library of Congress call number system to facilitate this work. Must be able to use library-owned scanning equipment to provide customers with the highest quality scans possible and use tools such as Adobe Acrobat Pro to edit those scans. Maintains the physical order of library collections on their assigned floors by performing a wide variety of operations to keep shelving, carrels, and collections accurate and accessible to all library users. Problem-solving with local staff as well as with patrons is required to resolve issues that may arise due to physical resource quality, routing requirements, or completeness of detailed bibliographic data necessary to fill requests.
Circulation Services: Provides customer support in person, by email, or by telephone according to established library guidelines and policies. Answers questions and resolves issues regarding patron accounts, billing, and library resources; including assistance with the library catalog and directional assistance as needed. Must protect the confidentiality of patron records. Material processing activities include emptying return bins, processing returned library material, transfers, and hold requests. Route library materials to the appropriate location or library department. Check out library material to patrons using the Integrated Library System. Maintain work areas in a clean and orderly manner. Will be required to work in branch locations as needed.
Reserves and Interlibrary Loan: Assists with the routine processing of customer requests for these services. Pulling materials from the library collections using the Library of Congress call number order. Adjust and interpret the item status in the integrated library system when helping to pull and/or scan materials for Reserves. Must be able to use library-owned scanning equipment to provide customers with the highest quality scans possible and use tools such as Adobe Acrobat Pro to edit those scans. Be proficient in Google management tools for storing, sharing, and managing documents.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED
- Must be physically able to perform the demands of the work including:
- standing for extended periods
- walking to branch library locations
- pushing fully loaded book trucks weighing up to 200 lbs.
- lifting heavy books
- stretching, bending, and kneeling
