    MIGRANT PROGRAM HOME/SCHOOL LIAISON

    The Migrant Program Home/Family Liaison has the responsibility of assisting migrant families in districts that are part of the VBISD consortium. The Home/School Liaison will also assist and/or provide limited services to eligible migrants who are preschoolers as well as those who are out-of-school youth. Such services will focus on, but not be limited to, helping migrants and their families in accessing appropriate educational and community services needed to meet their special needs in order to ensure attaining and maintaining students' academic success.

    Primary Responsibility to:

    Administrator for Migrant Education and English Language Acquisition (Title III) Programs AND Administrator of Whole Child Services

    Responsibilities (Essential Job functions):

    • Develop a positive relationship with the migrant and their families in consortium school districts.
    • Assist the migrant children and their families to access appropriate educational and community services needed to meet their special needs.
    • Provide limited academic services or assistance as needed for migrant preschoolers and their parents or caregivers.
    • Provide limited academic services or referrals to out-of-school youth.
    • Support the local migrant program and/or regional identification and recruitment program by providing information to the migrant program administrator on potential migrant students enrolled in the district.
    • Assist with informing parents through individual and group meetings of school programs and procedures including testing, graduation requirements, eligibility for scholarships, and extracurricular activities.
    • Facilitate discussions with parents about higher education and career planning.
    • Inform parents of their rights and responsibilities regarding school programs and procedures.
    • Keep documentation and records as required by the migrant programs.
    • Submit reports as required by the local migrant program and the Michigan Migrant Education Program.
    • Interpret school to home communications as needed.
    • Interpret at school conferences, school registration and events as scheduled. This position should not be viewed as being the primary interpreter for the district.
    • Assist with organizing parent/family meetings concerning the migrant program.
    • Assist with meetings for parents, students and staff concerning the migrant program.
    • Assist with registration and enrolling new students.
    • Attend in-service, workshops and conferences as assigned.
    • Provide information for staff members on migrant lifestyle and working with migrant families.
    • Make home visits as necessary during times when a parent or out-of-school youth is available.
    • Work with the preschool, special education, and migrant education teachers to help meet the needs of students in these programs.
    • Keep in touch with migrant families who have left the VBISD service area.
    • Alert the program administrator when migrant families do not respond.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.
    • Regular and reliable, in person attendance

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

    • Knowledge of the culture of the majority of migrant families in the VBISD service area.
    • Meet the requirements of a highly qualified paraprofessional.
    • Knowledge of principles of child development and instructional processes.
    • Ability to develop creative solutions.
    • Ability to follow directions.
    • Knowledge of state and federal policies and procedures regarding Federal and State Migrant Programs.
    • Be knowledgeable of recruitment requirements for the Michigan Migrant Education Program.
    • Possess computer skills to use word processing, e-mail, search systems, the internet.
    • Possess patience, flexibility, strong interpersonal and language skills. Collect and share data as directed and needed to meet program or student needs. Prepare and maintain accurate records.

    Education/Training Required:

    • Effective speaking, writing, reading, and listening communication skills in English and Spanish.
    • Knowledge of state and federal policies and procedures regarding Federal and State Migrant Education Program.
    • 32 college credits in education and child development preferred.

    Work Year : 190 days

    Work Day: 7 hours a day. Due to the nature of meeting with parents, students, school staff, program administrators, and out-of-school youth, the hours will be flexible with a minimum of one day of office work, and one day in local schools.

    Starting Salary: Specialized Support Staff - determined by applicant experience

    Terms of Employment: As per master agreement and provisions established by the Van Buren Board of Education.
