Updates Associated Student Legal Code based on legislation passed at weekly meetings maintains the historical records of changes and provides research and information on past policies and procedures. Serves as advisor for Internal Affairs Committee, External Affairs Committee, and the Committee on Committees.
Required Qualification
1-3 years Experience in political science, public policy, or law.
1-3 years Experience in an institution of higher education working with college students in an academic advising or counseling capacity, or other field that is directly related to the function s of the position or equivalency as determined by the hiring authority.
1-3 years Experience in working with diverse communities and across multiple identities and respect and consideration for all identities, perspectives, and differences.
Bachelor's Degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Thorough knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance.
Abilities in project management, problem identification and reasoning skills.
Background in political science, public policy, or law preferred.
Understanding of long term ramifications of policy.

40% Legal Code - Serves as expert informational resource for students on the A. S. Legal Code. The Legal Code is comprised of the A.S. Constitution, the A.S. By- laws and Standing Policies. Updates Associated Student Legal Code based on legislation passed at weekly meetings, maintains the historical records of changes and provides research and information on past policies and procedures. Provides written reports regarding entry of Legislation into the Legal Code. Ensures each piece of legislation is notated as to its status and record entry the Legal Code with notes or comments as needed. Ensures documentation of the start and end pieces of legislation for the year in the printed version of the Legal Code. Identifies issues or policy areas to explore, collects and analyzes information, then reports findings and proposes new policies for addressing problems. Guides students in research of issues surrounding the formulation of resolutions. This includes areas of state and federal law as well as issues of social justice or areas of political sensitivity. Attends weekly Senate meetings to ensure that legislation is accurately captured. Advises the Internal Affairs Committee in their review of weekly legislation and in particular alerts the committee to conflicts within the code or areas of concern. Advises student committee members in their analysis of the bill by reviewing the changes to the Legal Code, assisting students in understanding the impact a bill may have and providing analysis of other areas of the Legal Code affected by the bill. Provides training for Associated Students elected officers in formulating bills and resolutions. Develops curriculum and workshops for training in the area of policy writing and implementation. Provides one-on-one training when appropriate. 30% Advising - Serves as advisor for Internal Affairs Committee, External Affairs Committee, and the Committee on Committees. Training/Development: Provides training on leadership, interpersonal communication, project coordination, community engagement, and other topics as needed. Goal Setting/Strategic Planning: Assists students in establishing goals and desired outcomes, assessing and responding to student needs, and participates in long-range planning and development of new initiatives. Activities and Programs: Provides guidance on programming, funding, and marketing/outreach. Ensures coordination of efforts and prevents duplication of programs. Identifies resources in the department, on campus, and in the community and links student leadership to other entities for possible collaborations, and guides students in interactions with campus and community leaders. Relationships: Mediates conflicts and facilitates conversations between students involved. Supports students in distress, providing support and referring them to resources as needed. Policies, Procedures, Risks, and Liabilities: Advises on AS policies and procedures and follows University, local, county, state, and federal regulations, and assists with consideration of risks and liabilities. Utilizes knowledge of local resources and awareness of the current political climate to advise students on complex issues. Works with student entities to provide support for student projects, ensuring event advising, handling contracts, and performance agreements.
20% Training - Provides training for AS student staff in minute-taking for Senate, Finance Board, and other Boards and Committees meetings throughout the Association. Ensures the consistent and accurate taking of minutes across the Association, using a comprehensive template. Reviews minutes throughout the association on a regular basis to ensure training is sufficient and provides additional training as needed. Provides training for Associated Students elected officers in formulating bills and resolutions, using Robert's Rules of Order, meeting facilitation, or other topics as assigned by the Assistant Director of Governmental Affairs Develops curriculum and workshops for training in the area of policy writing and implementation. Provides one on-one training when appropriate. Provides feedback and training regarding group performance, group dynamics, conflict resolution methodologies, negotiation techniques and ethics to elected and appointed officers as assigned.
10% Assessment and Reporting - Serves as the backup for completing the annual report as needed. Serves as the primary Advisor to the Chief Operating Officer. Assists with the development, implementation, followup, and review of the strategic plan as outlined in the AS Legal Code. Responsible for soliciting information from all areas of Associated Students for the annual report. Reviews minutes from the AS Senate and boards and committees to determine events and issues that should be included. Writes descriptive material on events for the annual report. Edits material supplied by students or staff as needed, writing other sections as required. Synthesizes material submitted by students and staff into the annual report as a whole, being careful to maintain the student's voice. Responsible for distribution of the report throughout campus, the community, alumni, staff, and students. Supports the work of the department and the division through participation in committees and working groups and other efforts as requested. Supports the AS Main office as needed. May perform other duties as assigned.
