Hours and days required are: Work Sundays - Thursdays 9-5, and off every Friday and Saturday. This schedule will not change. Some days require coming in early or staying late for spay and neuter send off and returns.

Another shift option is working Tuesdays - Saturdays with every Sunday and Monday off.

Summary:

The Animal Care worker provides front line, hands-on medical care to all FSPCA animals under the direct supervision of the Shelter Manager. The Animal Care worker must be able to perform the functions of the job, multitask, and handle difficult situations and/or people in a fast paced environment while exhibiting excellent customer service toward staff, volunteers, and customers.

Observes animal behavior, appearances, and activity and monitors for indicators of illness, disease or discomfort.

Essential Duties and Functions:

• Maintain accurate "running records" for each animal's status and care in Shelter Buddy computer system.
• Respond in a timely manner to staff reports of animal medical issues
• Perform routine (daily) checks on each animal at the shelter
• Make spay/neuter list and assist in arranging transportation
• Medicate animals and give necessary vet treatments

a. Vaccines when due;

b. Heartworm and flea/tick preventatives;

c. Dawn baths;

d. Medicated baths;

e. Dewormer;

f. Weight checks;

g. Heartworm/FIV-FELV testing;

h. Testing fecal or urine samples;

I. Head to toe exam, check for and remove parasites, check ears (clean and treat), check teeth and clip nails as needed, check spay and neuter incisions.

• Maintain supplies/order list.
• Check emails and office box.
• Update rabies list.
• Sanitize treatment room.
• Maintain communication with foster families regarding animal's medical issues or vet treatments.
• Perform behavioral evaluations.
• Consult with and assist the vet.
• Triage all illnesses & injuries. Inform Shelter Manager of extraordinary medical situations or expenses.
• Test and re-vaccinate as needed.
• Conduct intakes using established protocols, including vaccinating and testing all animals.
• Answer phones while always being polite with an upbeat attitude.
• Transport animals to the vet if necessary and perform tasks as recommended by the vet.
• Assist potential adopters.
• Help with laundry.
• Clean dishes.
• Assist volunteers in the building.
• Communicate with shelter staff about animal concerns.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
• Must be an organized individual.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

• Ability to lift and transport materials weighing up to 55 pounds.
• Ability to lift animals that may weigh more than 55 pounds with the assistance of another person.
• Ability to handle animals effectively and humanely.
• Must be comfortable dealing with a wide array of animal behaviors and personalities.
• The ability to bend and squat repeatedly.
• The ability to stand for significant periods of time.
• Exposure to disinfectant solutions.
• Subject to animal bites and scratched while handling animals.
• Consistently exposed to animals and animal allergens.
• Must be available to work weekends and holidays as deemed necessary.
• Maintains equipment in good working condition.
• Must be able to come in early or stay late once or twice a week, sometimes more.

Qualifications:

• Animal care experience preferred.
• Ability and willingness to work directly with all shelter animals.
• Must be highly motivated and detail oriented.
• Exhibits a professional, positive, and upbeat manner.
• Conveys compassion, patience, and understanding with all animals in shelter care.
• Must be a team player and self-starter, able to work in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision, and display strong communication skills.
• Valid Virginia Driver's license required.
• Must be at least 18 years of age or older.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $15.00 per hour

Expected hours: 37 – 45 per week
