Utilization Management Director leads and directs the utilization review staff and function for a healthcare facility. Determines policies and procedures that incorporate best practices and ensure effective utilization reviews. Being a Utilization Management Director manages and monitors both concurrent reviews to ensure that the patient is getting the right care in a timely and cost-effective way and retrospective reviews after treatment has been completed. Provides analysis and reports of significant utilization trends, patterns, and impacts to resources. Additionally, Utilization Management Director consults with physicians and other professionals to develop improved utilization of effective and appropriate services. Requires a master's degree. Typically reports to top management. Typically requires Registered Nurse(RN). The Utilization Management Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. To be a Utilization Management Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience.     Job Description

     

    The UR Director possesses knowledge of psychiatric clinical diagnosis and the ability to articulate those indicators professionally.  The UR Director evaluates patient medical records to determine severity of patient’s illness and determining the appropriateness of level of care.  Serves as liaison for patients and hospital with insurance companies.   Negotiates and advocates for patient length of stay and level of care.  Oversees utilization review activities with other departments to ensure reimbursement for services provided by the hospital.  The UR Director leads physician weekly staffing meetings and coordinates with physician’s outpatient offices for the purposes of billing.  The UR Director has a working knowledge of all levels of care offered and appropriately manages patient benefits.

    Qualifications

    Job Requirements

    Education:   Masters prepared healthcare leader/director (Nursing, Counseling, Psychology or Social Work).

     

    Experience:   A minimum of 8-10 years of experience working in an acute inpatient psychiatric setting as a treatment team member or 5-7 years of experience in utilization management for both mental health and substance abuse behavioral health disorders.

     

    Licensure/Certification:  Valid TN RN license required, LCSW, or LPC preferred.

     

    Knowledge:   Knowledge of managed care payer business practices, behavioral health hospital operations and medical necessity determinations. Knowledge of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V) diagnostic codes with corresponding clinical assessment skills that support patient evaluation. Experience using data to identify trends. Ability to manage team productivity and compliance with required timelines. Excellent oral and written communication skills that drive departmental hospital engagement.
