Utilization Review Technician conducts utilization reviews to determine if patients are receiving care appropriate to illness or condition. Monitors patient charts and records to evaluate care concurrent with the patients treatment. Being a Utilization Review Technician reviews treatment plans and status of approvals from insurers. Collects and complies data as required and according to applicable policies and regulations. Additionally, Utilization Review Technician consults with nurses and physicians as needed. Position is non-RN. May require an associate degree or its equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor. May require Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT). The Utilization Review Technician gains exposure to some of the complex tasks within the job function. Occasionally directed in several aspects of the work.     Responsibilities include:

    • Reviews admissions to determine medical necessity and appropriateness of treatment.
    • Secures necessary data for extended stay reviews.
    • Presents abstract (via telecon) of clinical course of treatment, to all various insurance companies and/or their contractual agencies, to justify continued treatment.
    • Reviews, abstracts and assigns initial length of stay and extensions of treatment, as appropriate, for Medicare, self-pay and private (non-precertification) insurance companies.
    • Communicates all extensions of treatment to clinical teams and Director, Utilization Review.
    • Attends daily treatment team meetings.

    Qualifications include:

    • RN or four year degree in Social Work, Counseling, or related field
    • Previous Case Management or UR experience required
    • Previous experience in a hospital setting preferred 
    • Requires good writing skills along with the ability to interpret chart terminology
    • Knowledge of addiction helpful
