VAN DRIVER
Temporary 12-month contract
Effective for the 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 School Years
JOB GOAL
Incumbents are responsible for operating school vans in a manner that transports students safely and in accordance with scheduled routes. Performs vehicle pre-trip inspections, fueling, and minor vehicle maintenance to assure student/public safety and to protect district assets.
QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
- Prior driving experience preferred.
- Valid Arizona Driver’s license without infractions.
- Ability to read and write in order to communicate and receive instruction, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid Certification.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Drives a school van on assigned daily routes and on field trips.
- Reports unruly student activities, loitering and vandalism, safety, sanitary and fire hazards to the Transportation Department.
- Cleans, washes and fuels District van.
- Performs pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections.
- Maintains mileage records and daily logs.
- Reviews assigned van routes; notifies office of inconsistencies or needed changes.
- Transports students daily as assigned.
- Documents discipline problems and writes bus referral reports.
- May require driving duties outside city limits.
- Knowledge and ability to comply with safety procedures.
- Submits to annual and random drug and alcohol testing.
- Submits to annual Department of Transportation approved physical.
- Performs physical agility testing as required.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
- Knowledge of applicable Federal, state, county and city statutes, rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of applicable Cartwright School District and departmental policies and procedures.
- State and local law pertaining to school van operation.
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid Certification.
- Principles and practices of safe school vehicle operation.
- Knowledge of school routes.
- Using equipment such as first aid kits, hand-held radios, mops, thermometers, disinfectant machines, and other related items.
- Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction in English.
- Make decisions in a variety of situations regarding priorities and effectively handling emergencies.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.
- Medium Work: Exerting up to 130 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Subjected to odors, chemicals, blood and other body fluids, extreme temperatures, work space restrictions, intense noises, and travel.
