This is a safety sensitive position and requires pre-employment and random drug testing
mandated by the Federal Transit Administration.
Job Summary:
The Vehicle Service Worker will perform regular cleaning and fueling of maintenance equipment in the
facility.
Under the supervision of the Director of Maintenance and the direction of the Shop Supervisor/Lead
Mechanic the Vehicle Service Worker is responsible for the general exterior cleaning of all vehicles, the
fueling and checking of all fluid levels in all HTA vehicles, minor vehicle repairs, and the cleaning of the
HTA maintenance facility and parking area.

Duties/Responsibilities:
• Responsible for the daily fueling of buses and vans including the recording of related data.
• Fuels support/staff vehicles.
• Cleans exterior of all HTA buses, vans and support/staff vehicles, including detailing, i.e., tires,
bumpers, wheels, etc.
• Cleans interior of all HTA vehicles, as assigned. Sweeps and mops buses daily.
• Checks and maintains all essential fluid levels such as engine oil, transmission fluid, and power
steering fluid, and records related data.
• Assists mechanics with repair of vehicles as requested.
• Assists with road calls and replacement of vehicles for revenue service.
• Probes fareboxes daily, remove and dump vaults in the authority’s safe. Replaces empty vaults in
each bus or van.
• Monitors security of yard and office area during shift.
• Maintains cleanliness of yard by keeping it free of trash, oil and debris.
• Maintains cleanliness of fueling area on a daily basis.
• Assists in facility maintenance such as gates, bus washing, building repairs, etc.
• Conforms with all regulations governing hazardous materials use and disposal and follow and
comply with HTA’s Spill Pollution Prevention Plan.
• Performs other miscellaneous tasks and duties as assigned.
• Must maintain a valid Class B driver license with a passenger endorsement.

Education and Experience:
• Experience with basic vehicle maintenance including checking fluid levels, etc.
• Good driving record required.

• Use of hands to handle control, or feel objects, or tools.
• Bend or twist their body.
• Stand for long periods of time.
• Repeat the same movements.
• Must be able to kneel, stoop, crouch, or bend, or reach out.
It is important for vehicle service workers to be able to:
• Hold the arm and hand in one position or hold the hand steady while moving the arm.
• Use one or two hands to grasp, move, or assemble objects.
• See details of objects that are less than a few feet away.
• Use muscles to lift, push, pull, or carry heavy objects up to 50 pounds.

- Voluntary Investment 457 Supplemental Plan: The purpose of the Deferred Compensation
Plan is to help you establish an investment savings program that grows over time and from
which you can withdraw money that will supplement your retirement. Deferred Compensation
contributions are automatically withdrawn from our paycheck which provides a convenient
way to save for retirement. The amount you defer does not reduce the earnings upon which
your pension is calculated. Any HTA employee is qualified to enroll in this plan.
- Opt-Out in lieu of Health Insurance: A qualifying employee opting-out of employer sponsored
health insurance who provides written proof will receive an opt-out incentive equal to 100% of
the employee-only premium for the least expensive plan offered by PERS in Humboldt
County.
- Paid Time Off (PTO); Vacation is accrued based on the number of hours in paid status, after
the first hour worked at .073 (averages to 3.5 weeks of PTO), for the first 2 years after the
employee gains full-time status. Three (3) PTO buyout options per fiscal year.
- Sick Leave: Sick leave accrues at the rate of .0385 beginning on the first hour worked.
- Rate Increases: One-step increase per calendar year until reaching Step E. Employees
advance to Step F after 10 years of service, Step G after 15 years of service, and Step H after
20 years of service.
- Social Security: Employees do not contribute to Social Security.
- Paid Training: New Starting/Training Pay at Step A, $20.50 per hour, while obtaining a
Commercial Class B License. After a six-month probationary period, employee is eligible for
an increase, Step B, $21.53 per hour.
• 10 Paid Holidays Per Calendar Year: Martin Luther King, Jr., Memorial Day, Veteran’s Day,
the day after Thanksgiving, and Christmas Eve, HTA operates on a Saturday schedule and
employees are subject to work. Guaranteed Holiday’s Day off: 4th of July, Thanksgiving Day,
Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, and any other holiday declared as such by the HTA
Governing Board.
• AFSCME Bargaining Unit: HTA is formally represented by a union for employees classified in
the bargaining unit which consist of the coach operators, mechanics, and shop supervisors.
The bargaining unit is known as the American Federation of State County and Municipal
• Employees. Union Dues: 1.3% of gross wages per pay period; not to exceed $28.50 per pay
period.
• Employee Assistance Program (EAP): The Employee Assistance Program offers guidance on
emotional, family, and other personal problems.
• Transit Passes: All active full-time employees and their eligible dependents are eligible for
transit passes for use over HTA bus lines. Dependents of employees are only eligible up to
age 26. Not eligible after 26. All retirees are eligible for transit passes.
