Veterinary Assistant prepares treatment room for examination of animals; restrains animals during examination, treatment, or inoculation. Administers injections, performs venipunctures, applies wound dressings, cleans teeth, and takes vital signs of animal. Being a Veterinary Assistant requires a high school diploma or its equivalent. Under the supervision of the Staff Veterinarian(s), the Lead Veterinary Technician, and the Medical Administrative Manager, the person who fills this role assists in providing support for the Shelter Veterinary Tech team on a daily basis. This will include but is not limited to, feeding and cleaning after patients in the medical area, manual restraint of patients for various procedures, routine and medicated baths, preparing laboratory equipment to receive samples for testing, preparing for patient exams, etc. This individual must have basic computer and data entry skills, to enter records into shelter management software (currently PetPoint).
In addition, this role can serve as an introduction to advancing into a junior shelter veterinary technician role, under specific guidelines and training.
Duties/Information:
· Works cooperatively and professionally with all staff, including the clinic, animal care team, and customer service.
· Represents the Humane Society of Greater Miami to the highest degree by providing good customer service.
· Treats all animals humanely, properly, and with compassion at all times, regardless of the situation or circumstance.
· Performs various tasks/functions as needed and as determined by the Lead Veterinary Technician or Shelter Veterinarian(s).
Medical Duties:
· General basic care of patients in the Medical Processing Areas e.g., Ensure food and water are available for patients, supplying fresh litter, nutritional support for neonates etc.
· Cleans and disinfects medical work areas (Processing 1 & 3 etc.)
· Manual restraint of patients for various procedures e.g., Venipuncture, temperature check, examinations, collection of fecal samples, etc.
· Prepares diagnostic equipment for various procedures e.g., Preparing IDEXX lab machine for the next patient, preparing the fecal test for analysis.
· Performs routine and medicated baths/dips on designated days.
· Observes animals in the shelter for signs of illness or injury and takes immediate action by notifying Lead Veterinary Technician and/or Shelter Veterinarian(s).
· Prepares medication for animals in shelter under the direction of the Shelter Veterinarian(s) or Lead Veterinary Technician (after training).
· Administers medication under the direction of the Shelter Veterinarian(s) or Lead Veterinary Technician (after training).
· Sample collection, performing, and interpretating a wide range of in-house diagnostic tests e.g. Snap test, ear cytology, skin scrapes etc. (after training).
· Administers subcutaneous injections under the direction of the Shelter Veterinarian(s) or Lead Veterinary Technician (after training).
· Performs intravenous blood draw for in-house testing, snap test, etc. under the direction of the Shelter Veterinarian(s) or Lead Veterinary Technician (after training).
Administrative Duties:
· Become familiar with The Policies and Protocols set forth in the Humane Society of Greater Miami’s Policy Manual and the Medical Protocol Manual.
· Assists shelter technicians in keeping a daily log of health log concerns for each animal receiving treatment.
· Assists Lead Veterinary Technician in ensuring and maintaining appropriate inventory of all necessary supplies, medications, and equipment throughout the shelter and the Intake building.
· Re-stocks medical supplies and adds missing supplies to order list as needed.
· Scans and uploads patient’s medical records into Shelter Management Software (currently PetPoint).
· Reports on any safety hazards or unsafe usage of Humane Society of Greater Miami equipment and supplies.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
· Experience in caring for and handling animals (cats and dogs) in a safe, effective, and humane manner.
· Must be independent, able to multi-task, take initiative, and possess excellent communication skills.
· Possess excellent interpersonal skills to be able to interface with co-workers and foster parents in a tactful, sympathetic, and objective manner.
· Must be proficient in basic computer skills.

· Other possible job hazards include exposure to corrosive chemicals and cleaning agents, exposure to feral and vicious animals, to animals with an unknown health history and therefore, exposure to zoonotic diseases through the use of hypodermic needles, animal bites and scratches, airborne transmission, and physical contact.
