Volunteer Coordinator - Hospice implements the daily undertakings of a volunteer program to attract, inspire, train, and deploy volunteers. Coordinates the recruiting, interviewing, and hiring of volunteer workers. Being a Volunteer Coordinator - Hospice assists with the training and scheduling of volunteer workers and provides immediate support and guidance on issues or questions. Motivates and inspires volunteers to encourage teamwork. Additionally, Volunteer Coordinator - Hospice ensures that the activities of the volunteer workers meet the needs of the organization. May require a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Volunteer Coordinator - Hospice work is closely managed. Works on projects/matters of limited complexity in a support role. This position supports Mercy's philosophy of patient centered care by recruiting,training and placement of quality volunteers, which delivers competent volunteers who support the various departments and staff within Mercy Medical Center, Hall-Perrine Cancer Center, Health Plaza and Hospice of Mercy. These services are offered with a positive, caring spirit, compatible with the mission of Mercy Medical Center and the Sisters of Mercy.
Job Duties- Recruits volunteers to support and enhance interdisciplinary services related to patient care
- Interviews volunteer candidates
- Conducts orientations for volunteers / non-paid interns
- Assigns volunteers to departments matching their skills with department requests and patient needs
- Evaluates volunteers who are the responsibility of Volunteer Services
- Maintains permanent records, Health Records and Evaluations for all volunteers/non-paid interns
- Assists the Director in all phases of operation related to volunteer services in the department
- Handles potential sensitive issues with volunteers as needed
- Oversees screening, recruitment, orientation, training, retention, and evaluation of volunteers in accordance with Mercy Medical Center Policies, Medicare, TJC and NHPCO standards
- Attends patient care conference to collaborate with the interdisciplinary team regarding patients' plan of care
- Participates in community and organizational events as needed to promote hospice volunteer programs
- Coordinates the Hospice of Mercy Volunteer Appreciation event
- Facilitates volunteer involvement in special events for patients / families and / or nursing facilities (i.e. Daffodil days and Christmas cookie boxes)
- Recruits and facilitates retention events for volunteers
- Develops recruitment / outreach literature / tools to highlight volunteer responsibilities and rewards of service
- Develops and maintains job descriptions for volunteer positions
- Participates in continuous performance improvement
- Coordinates all aspects of volunteer involvement with patients and families and facilitates process by which pertinent documentation is included in the patient's medical record
- Provides orientation to new hospice staff regarding volunteer services
- Prepares and maintains volunteer reports and statistics as required

Professional Experience-
Minimum of two years experience coordinating volunteer activities or equivalent experience required.

Management / supervisory experience and / or volunteer experience preferred.
Education-
BA in related field required

Volunteer Management course preferred
Licensure, Certification, Registration-
Volunteer Management certification preferred.

Current valid driver's license, valid auto insurance and have own transportation required.

Iowa Dependent Adult Abuse Mandatory Reporter training required. Employee must submit certification of completed training to Human Resources prior to start or transfer date.
