Job Summary: The volunteer coordinator is responsible for overseeing the daily activities of the volunteer department by providing direct supervision of volunteers supporting staff with volunteer management at SPCA of Texas’s Dallas Animal Care Center and Russell E. Dealey Rescue Center, and Ellis County Animal Care Center under their supervision. This position helps to implement projects which expand the reach of the volunteer department in support of SPCA of Texas’ Core Values and Mission and skillfully engages, recruits and motivates volunteers to support each department within the organization.
Summary of Essential Responsibilities:
• Demonstrate the core values of the SPCA of Texas.
• Oversee daily volunteer activity at Dallas Animal Care Center, Russell E. Dealey Animal Rescue Center and occasional. off-site events to support staff with the utilization and engagement of volunteers.
• Direct, train, motivate, engage and evaluate volunteer individually and as a whole.
• Ensure that open volunteer positions are filled.
• Actively engage with volunteers in such a way that provides support for our volunteers and staff and proactively improves our volunteer program.
• Be an ambassador for the SPCA of Texas, sharing the work and mission with your friends and family and be knowledgeable of the various ways to support our work.
Summary of Essential Job Tasks:
• Thorough understanding and working knowledge of volunteer program.
• Thorough knowledge of SPCA of Texas policies and procedures.
• Ensure that safety guidelines and procedures are maintained and adhered to.
• Maintain open communication with staff in other departments regarding established and changing policies and procedures.
• Instruct volunteers on policies, procedures, and specific tasks.
• Regularly give presentations and hands on training to volunteers and volunteer groups including orientation, animal handling training, and group experience presentations.
• Database management for volunteer accounts, volunteer scheduling and the scheduling of trainings.
• Daily records keeping and reporting.
• Post, advertise and fill volunteer assignments and shifts.
• Oversee students coming for school-related community service and provide feedback for evaluations to be given by Senior Manager, Learning & Development.
• Complete and follow-up on volunteer incident reports.
• Represent the volunteer department by working on selected holidays.
• Perform as an administrator on the SPCA of Texas volunteer Facebook page and ensure that members are following the guidelines. Remove old volunteers as necessary.
• Organize and manage multiple tasks.
• Additional tasks as assigned by the Senior Manager, Learning & Development.
Abilities Required:
• Static Strength: the ability to exert maximum muscle force to lift, push, pull or carry objects up to 40 pounds.
• Judgement and decision making: the ability to consider the relative costs and benefits of potential actions and to choose the most appropriate one.
• Oral and written expression: the ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand.
• Driving: the ability to drive and a mode of transportation to drive to each SPCA of Texas location.
Applicant Information:
• 1 year of volunteer relations experience and/or shelter experience.
• 2 years of college preferred.
• Bilingual a plus.
• Animal handling experience a plus.
Required professional licensing or certifications:
• Valid Texas driver’s license.
• Good driving record.
Working Conditions:
• The individual performing this job may be required to work more than 8 hours in a day but will not work more than 30 hours per week.
