The Fabrication Studio Manager is an evening and weekend shift position, working from Monday through Thursday from 2pm-10pm and Sunday 12pm-8pm. As part of the SF Shops Studio Manager team, the Fabrication Studio Manager supervises the Model Shop, Metal Shop, and associated spaces that primarily support student making in the Architecture, Industrial Design, and Sculpture programs. They are the supervisor and administrator of the San Francisco Tool Center library, and the lead supervisor of the San Francisco Fabrication Shops on weekday evenings.
The Fabrication Studio Manager must possess broad competence with wood, metal, plastics, fabric, and digital fabrication. This person should have thorough knowledge of workplace health and safety regulations, the ability to demonstrate best practices in safe tool, equipment, and material use, and uphold professional studio culture for all users. The ability to maintain and model calm and focus in a high-pressure environment is critical to success in this position; a commitment to being a strong and collaborative team member is also fundamental.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:
Management & Administration - 35% of time
- Directly manages the operation of the Tool Center, and ensures a well-maintained and safe environment throughout the entire Fabrication Studio.

Primary supervisor of the San Francisco Shops in the evenings from 5pm to 10pm, with general oversight of the Furniture Studio, Model Shop, Metal Shop, Painting & Casting Rooms, Backlot, and RP Studio.

Independently manages a team of 10 work-study students.

Responsible for implementing policies and procedures ensuring health, life, and safety in the studios.

Trains and monitors student workers in studio/shop tasks; additional training in tool maintenance.

Serves as a team member supervising the various graduate studio assistants (GSAs) within Studio Operations.
Academic Support - 45% of time
- Proactively communicates with users as an instructional resource.

Holds faculty and students accountable to safety and studio policies and procedures.

Creates and delivers orientations to students, staff and faculty on specific tools and techniques. Creates skillshares as schedule allows.

Collaborates with faculty to provide appropriate support to large curriculum projects.
Studio Operations- 20% of time
- Delivers safety orientations and demonstrates safe use of tools and equipment.

In collaboration with the Fabrication Studio Operations manager, maintain and repair the tools and equipment in the Tool Center, as well as ordering consumable supplies.

Maintain Tool Center tool and equipment inventory through WebCheckout software platform.

Assists in creating and managing reservations for all shop users.

Works in conjunction with First Year, Fine Arts, and Design studio management teams, offering technical oversight and program support.
Additional Responsibilities - 10% of time

Assists students in distress.

Serves as a member of the College's Emergency Response Team.

Performs additional duties as required.
Supervisory Responsibility
This person will provide supervisory support to the Studio Operations Managers and the Fabrication Studio management team. This person has direct supervision of student workers.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education & Professional Qualifications
-
Bachelor degree or equivalent professional experience in art, design, furniture or related field of study.

3 years expertise in shop and studio tools, equipment, processes, fabrication and assembly techniques.
-
Practicing artist, designer, or craftsperson preferred.
Administrative & Management Experience
-
Confident using independent judgment in decision making.
-
Experience collaborating and working in a team setting required. Experience working with students is preferred.

Developed organizational and task management skills; strong verbal and written communication skills.
Specialized Knowledge & Skills
-
Familiarity with a broad range of materials; proficiency in multiple approaches to fabrication and design will be expected.
- Knowledge of and commitment to health and safety as they apply to artistic materials and regulations.

Thorough knowledge of safe use and maintenance of hand and power tools, including troubleshooting equipment and performing repairs.
- Familiarity using a variety of software applications including G Suite, Excel, Adobe, and Mac/Apple proficiency. WebCheckout knowledge highly desirable.

Working Conditions

This union-eligible position is currently scheduled to work Monday through Thursday from 2pm-10pm and Sunday 12pm-8pm during the Fall and Spring academic sessions. During Summer and Winter breaks, hours are generally 9am-5pm weekdays. Must be able to occasionally work outside of their normal schedule.

Physical Requirements

Must possess the ability to safely perform the physical work required of all duties, including manual dexterity, agility, strength and coordination.

Ability to lift 50 lbs.

Must possess a valid California driver's license and be able to operate a full size pickup truck.

Ability to operate material handling equipment, including forklifts and pallet jacks is expected. Training and certification will be provided.
WORK SCHEDULE:

CCA considers a full-time work week to be 37.5 hours per week.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

The rate of pay for the position is $31.83 per hour.

This position is covered under the staff union collective bargaining agreement and will be required to contribute to union dues/agency fees.
