    Job Description

    Lick-Wilmerding High School is looking for a shop faculty member to teach four design-and-build classes that introduce students to the object design process, some 3-D Modeling with Rhino, and how to safely work with a variety of tools in a woodshop space. The ideal candidate must be comfortable working safely with a diverse set of high school students, using a wide variety of tools and machines, in an interdisciplinary shop environment. You will need some knowledge or desire to learn lathes, saws, CNC milling, laser cutting, 3D digital modeling (we use Rhino), and general woodshop work. The Technical Arts Department is a collaborative environment where instructors work together to build an inclusive student experience in design, engineering, and craft. This is a one-semester 80% time position that includes benefits. Your day is about 50% teaching and 50% preparation, one-on-one assistance, and meeting time. There is a possibility of the role being less than 80% if necessary,

    Class Responsibilities:

    • Teach one class to 9th-grade students using an existing curriculum that introduces them to design thinking, drawing, digital 3D-modeling (we use Rhino), prototyping, and project planning.

    • Teach three Fall semester classes called Joinery and Turning. This class teaches students how to safely learn joinery and turning techniques on the table saw, miter saw, planer, sanders, lathe, and more. The class teaches through the lens of design, collaboration, and project management. The instructor has flexibility with specifics in the currently existing curriculum.

    Additional Responsibilities:

    • Teach and manage a diverse set of students in working safely with a wide variety of tools and machines during both class and open shop times.

    • Collaborate with other instructors to keep the department more inclusive, innovative, efficient, exciting, and safe

    • Assist in the maintenance, organization, and safety of a wood-focused shop space

    • Attend monthly department and faculty meetings

    • Meet with students outside of class time for individualized help with projects

    • BA or higher in one of the following: woodworking, industrial design, product design, engineering, architecture, art, or similar field.

    • Willingness to engage high school students in the safe use of tools in an OSHA approved environment

    • Experience with wood lathes, table saws, chop saws.

    • Some experience CNC tools (we have laser cutters, CNC Plasma, CNC wood router, 3D printing and more)

    • Some 3D modeling experience (Rhino preferred, open to training)

    • Commitment to team teaching and team support

    • Commitment to equity and inclusion/decolonizing education with students and teachers of varying racial, gender, socioeconomic, and other core identifiers

    • Flexibility, discipline, and patience when working with students aged 14-18 years

    • An inherent desire to grow and innovate

    • The school is committed to public purpose and community outreach. Experience or interest in these is a plus.

    Physical Requirements:

    Applicants should be able to comfortably lift a minimum of 20 lbs of class supplies and materials, be on your feet for 23 hours on a concrete floor, and be able to sit and work at a computer for 23 hours at a time. At times, students and machines make the shop environment noisytolerance of medium to loud noise is recommended. General shop and wood dust are commonapplicants with allergies to these particles would likely find them challenging to manage.

    Salary Range: Pro-rated based on annual salary scale of $80,000 to $160,000 based on years of experience and percentage time
