LAB TECHNICIAN - PRODUCT & PROCESS DEVELOPMENT - RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT (AUSTIN, MN)

RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Works with intermediate supervision and sometimes direct supervision
- Performs routine tasks in R&D Pilot Plant. Conducts quality control procedures/cuttings for pilot plant as assigned. Able to perform tests/tasks exactly as written. Able to operate R&D equipment independently to achieve test goals.
- May assist with administrative duties as assigned, such as safety audits, shipping or receiving duties, equipment inventory, obtaining COAs, ordering supplies, or restocking ingredient inventories. Maintains QC and thermal records (charts) as assigned.
- Overtime is not a regular part of this position; however, at the discretion of managers, special project work or travel to plant, customer or food show locations is sometimes necessary which may or may not require overtime.
- Prepares, displays and presents food products to internal and external customers.
- This position will be working the loading dock and receiving oversized deliveries. They should have strong communication skills and patience as the daily task are completed. Hiring managers are considering people with plant, laboratory, or post high school education (scientific/technical) experience.
- They will be working with truck drivers and relaying instructions as the R&D department (directly behind Hormel’s corporate north building off highway 1-90) is often confused with the R&D Labs which is offsite.
- Strong teamwork ethics but also capable of independent work with upbeat/can-do behavior. Team chemistry is very important. Hiring managers decided to go with a temp employee to have a chance to evaluate performance/relationship-building before offering a permanent position.
- Won’t get bored working daily task such as lifting, storing, and inventorying large deliveries.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required
- Two years post high school education in the scientific or technical disciplines or the equivalent in laboratory experience and/or plant experience.
- Demonstrated ability to perform independent or group work.
- Demonstrated inclusive behavior, including treating others with dignity and respect.
- Ability to show resilience through staying engaged, and proactively holding oneself accountable.
- Must be capable of standing for extended periods of time.
- Demonstrated ability to use computer software (such as Excel) to calculate formulas and analyze/interpret data from experiments - must also be competent in the Windows environment including Microsoft Word, Outlook and TEAMS.
- On occasion, may have to lift up to 50 pounds.
- May have to work for several hours in temperature extremes of 32 degrees and a zero-degree freezer for short periods of time.
