Under the general supervision of the Director of Discovery Science and Innovation, the Research Scientist will be responsible for initiating, developing, and executing research projects that will aid in creating commercially viable and innovative nutritional supplement products. Creating written materials for peer reviewed journals, the communities of clinical practitioners and for lay audience, is an integral part of this position.
The Scientist must be able to critically evaluate emerging published research, including in vitro, in vivo (animal) and clinical studies, and effectively incorporate available information in the design and execution of ongoing studies. This position will also be responsible for conducting molecular and in vivo studies in house, overseeing studies conducted by collaborators and effectively organizing, analyzing, and presenting data in graphical and written formats. A diverse scientific background, including experience in data analysis and scientific writing, is highly preferred.
Essential Functions
- Design, oversee and conduct research studies focused on nutritional supplements and their effects on health
- Effectively translate and communicate study results by preparing original manuscripts for peer review journals, review manuscripts and white papers, reports, presentations, and other communication materials
- Assist with literature searches, reference management, bibliographies, and literature libraries
- Independently synthesize available research information into publication materials suitable for a wide range of audiences
- Present data/results internally and externally
- Contribute to writing grant applications
- Responsible for developing and validating assays in preparation for upcoming laboratory and clinical studies
- Direct, train, and supervise other laboratory personnel as needed
- Design and implement analytical assays, such as HPLC, Mass Spec, animal and human tissue extraction/analysis, ELISA, in vivo studies, and other assays as needed.
Workload Split:
- 30%-40% of this job is in the lab (Research Scientist) and the rest is focused on the Scientific Writing aspect of the job.
Qualifications
Education:
- PhD in Biological or Chemical Sciences (i.e., Biochemistry, Biology, Neuroscience, Immunology, Nutrition or a related field)
- Industry experience preferred but not required
Experience:
- 3 years of relevant experience in lab operation with knowledge of GLP regulations
- Experience with standard molecular biology, analytical chemistry and biological assays (i.e., HPLC, ELISA, Western blot) is required
- Experience with analytical chemistry assays is required
- Solid skills in statistical data analyses using R or similar software are required
- Experience in organizing and presenting the data for scientific publications and presentations is required
- The ability to independently create scientific publications in grammatically correct English is required
- Experience in creating publications and presentations for various types of audiences (i.e., clinicians, researchers and lay audience)
- Management and training of lab personnel/interns/scientists in basic lab skills, safety, documentation, and compliance with lab regulations
- Background in handling rodents or willingness to learn animal surgery and behavioral testing is preferred
- Experience with developing and managing research projects independently is required
- Basic managerial and interpersonal skills are required
Specialized Knowledge and Skills:
- Knowledge of basic lab operation requirements and compliance with regulations governing discovery labs (chemical and biological biohazard handling regulations, safety, documentation, analytical instruments contracts and maintenance, GLP, etc.)
- Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
- Experience with graphical illustration software is highly desirable
- HPLC (High-Performance Liquid Chromatography)
- Knowledge of PCR methods and use of Luminex analyzers is a plus
- Assay development across a variety of biochemical targets is a plus
- In vivo research experience in animal models is a plus
- Experience in designing and analyzing ELISA assays
- Hands-on experience in designing, managing, and analyzing Western Blots
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team
