    SUMMARY: Responsible for District Wide water and wastewater systems.  Oversees and supervises maintenance services at all District water and wastewater facilities to include District personnel, contractors and consultants.   Under general direction reviews, and manages the work of maintenance staff engaged in a variety of maintenance tasks of unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled work within  District plants; ensures work quality and adherence to established codes, environmental regulations, policies and procedures; performs related work as required.  Works with and assists the Building Services Supervisor with maintenance tasks throughout the District  as assigned.

     

    Documents and processes Maintenance Work Orders utilizing School Dude to ensure that the repair and maintenance of all facilities are in compliance with New Mexico Environmental Department, Drinking Water Standards, state statues and building code requirements.  Ensures that staff is properly trained and is qualified to service District plants when assigned to work with the Water and Wastewater Operator.  Responsible for the day-to-day operation of plants, provides for technical support; schedules work daily as well as contract work as required.  Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: applying pertinent codes, policies, regulations and/or laws; handling hazardous materials; planning and managing projects; preparing and maintaining accurate records.  Must hold operator licenses in water and wastewater as noted in the job announcement for the position, minimum of Level 3.  Ensures that all facilities have supplies and equipment; maintains a computer database for all assigned facilities; maintains a current computer database for telephone contacts for all support staff and primary contacts at the state and federal level as necessary.  Operator is on call 24/7 for emergency response and may be assigned on a temporary, rotating, or permanent status to any of the facilities of the District according to the needs of the District.

     

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

     

    1. Acts as the District representative for all operations relating to water and wastewater operations.  Assumes responsibility for the overall maintenance of District plants and other assigned areas.

     

    1. Plans, prioritizes, assigns, reviews, and participates in the work of maintenance personnel engaged in a variety of tasks in maintenance and general upkeep of assigned District plants, facilities and adjacent areas.  Plans, schedules and coordinates overhauls and preventative maintenance programs.

     

    1. Plans and schedules the taking of lab samples and submits them for analysis to a qualified laboratory.  Interprets test results and makes necessary adjustments to plant operations to assure compliance with statutory standards.  Takes lead and copper samples for water systems as required.

     

    1. Participates in the development of goals and objectives as well as policies and procedures; makes recommendations for changes and improvements to existing standards, policies, and procedures; participates in the implementation of approved policies and procedures; monitors work activities to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures.

     

    1. Provides support to the Facilities Manager and Building Services Supervisor for the purpose of meeting departmental goals and objectives as well as those of the Public School Capital Outlay Council (PSCOC) and Public School Facility Authority (PSFA).  Implements recommendations made by the New Mexico Environment department.

     

    1. Participates in the overall planning and operation of water and wastewater systems with consultants and the New Mexico Environmental Department to assure maximum plant efficiency.  Makes written recommendations for plant operation improvements.

     

    1. Receives, issues and maintains inventory control of supplies.  Ensures that proper equipment is purchased, available and assigned where needed.

     

    1. Inspects facilities and buildings on a routine basis to monitor water quality; inspects and evaluates work in progress and upon completion, inspects and approves work to assure that repairs, maintenance, and project activities are performed in accordance with District regulations, policies, and operating procedures and practices; identifies problem areas and takes corrective action.  Initiates Work Orders through School Dude on a routine basis.

     

    1. Ensures that District buildings and facilities are in compliance with all life-safety standards for water, wastewater.

     

    1. Assists in accumulation of data for the FIMS and Utility Direct to monitor utility usage; Maintains records concerning operations and programs; prepares reports on operations and activities.

     

    1. Perform other work related duties as assigned by the Facilities Manager and the Building Services Supervisor

    EDUCATION AND RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE:

    • High school diploma or equivalent.
    • Five to Ten years experience in Water and Wastewater Operations. Level 3 in water and wastewater license required as a minimum.

    LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS or CERTIFICATIONS:

    • Criminal background check and drug test required for hire.
    • Valid New Mexico driver’s license.
    • Valid License/Certificate for additional trade experience and qualifications

    Typical Duties

     

    • Analyzes water and wastewater and treats as necessary;

    • Checks and regulates chlorinator at water plants;
    • Cleans grates, tanks and other wastewater treatment equipment;
    • Draws and removes sludge from tanks and plant;
    • Repairs and installs water mains, service lines, valves and hydrants;
    • Cleans and replaces plugged and broken sewer lines and lays new lines;
    • Builds, cleans and repairs manholes and manhole covers;
    • Oils, greases and repairs water and sewer pumps;
    • Maintains preventative maintenance records;
    • Performs a variety of routine water and sewer maintenance duties.
