Welder joins, fabricates, and repairs metal and other weldable material by applying appropriate welding techniques. Interprets blueprints, specifications, diagrams or schematics to determine appropriate welding process. Being a Welder inspects completed welds to determine structural soundness. Familiar with and complies with all safety requirements and protocols for working in a hazardous environment. Additionally, Welder may prepare the materials and set up for a welding device or robot. May be required to complete an apprenticeship and/or formal training in area of specialty. Typically requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Welder works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area. Possesses a moderate understanding of general aspects of the job.     The Opportunity
    WSDOT is currently seeking is currently seeking a Welder (Equipment Technician 3) to play a critical role in maintaining safe and reliable transportation options. This position emphasizes fostering a respectful work environment with a focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion. Responsibilities include fabricating specialized parts, conducting MIG/TIG welding, and performing inspections, diagnoses, and repairs on various equipment used in highway maintenance and industrial/commercial settings. The ideal candidate will contribute to WSDOT's mission of improving communities and economic vitality through their expertise and dedication to quality maintenance practices.
     
    What to Expect
    Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Welder will:
    • Weld, fabricate, repair, overhaul, inspect, and maintain heavy equipment and all other types of equipment used in roadway maintenance and construction.
    • Design, fabricate, weld, and install additional equipment on vehicles, such as rotating beacons, hydraulic systems, hitches, reinforced bumpers, brackets, guards, etc.
    • Paint small equipment such as plows, sanders, and truck beds.
    • Overhaul or rebuild all types of diesel and gasoline engines to restore them to good condition.
    • Troubleshoot, overhaul, or rebuild all types of gearboxes, such as manual or automatic transmissions, differentials, angle boxes, reduction boxes, transfer cases, etc.
    • Repair, design, and troubleshoot all types of hydraulic systems.
    • Troubleshoot and repair brake systems of all types, including air, hydraulic, power assist, and their components.
    • Repair miscellaneous parts of equipment such as front end, steering, cooling systems, etc.
    • Perform seasonal work on sanders, snowplows, and four-wheel-drive equipment.
    • Respond to field calls and perform preventative maintenance on all equipment.
     
    Qualifications
    To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
    • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
    • Three years (3) of experience as a welder, fabricator, or millwright, OR successful completion of technical training at a recognized welding/fabricating apprenticeship program. 
    • Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), with “N” and Air Brake endorsements, no automatic transmission restriction, and DOT Medical Certification within 6 months of hire date.
    • Ability to perform manual labor and operate machinery or equipment while exposed to hazardous materials or conditions, including field, site, roadway, construction, right-of-way activity, warehouse, or manufacturing.
    • Valid driver’s license 
    • Strong communication skills. 
     
    It is preferred that qualified candidates also have the following:
    • Successful completion of vocational technical training in heavy equipment, light vehicles, and/or industrial/commercial equipment repair, including welding/fabricating. 
    • One (1) year assisting a journey-level heavy equipment mechanic.

     Important Notes 

    • This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs. 
    • The salary listed includes the legislatively approved 20% Group B premium for ET3 positions located in Kent, WA, King County. 
    • The salary listed includes the legislatively approved 10% Group C premium for ET3 positions in Kent, WA, King County. 
    • The salary listed includes the legislative-approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County.
    • This position is not eligible for remote work.
    • Overtime may be required to meet business needs.

    • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
