Welder joins, fabricates, and repairs metal and other weldable material by applying appropriate welding techniques. Interprets blueprints, specifications, diagrams or schematics to determine appropriate welding process. Being a Welder inspects completed welds to determine structural soundness. Familiar with and complies with all safety requirements and protocols for working in a hazardous environment. Additionally, Welder may prepare the materials and set up for a welding device or robot. May be required to complete an apprenticeship and/or formal training in area of specialty. Typically requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Welder works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area. Possesses a moderate understanding of general aspects of the job. Job Description:
**Duties:**
Operate safety equipment and use safe work habits.
Weld components in flat, vertical, and overhead positions.
Ignite torches or start power supplies and strike arcs by touching electrodes to metals being welded, completing electrical circuits.
Clamp, hold, tack-weld, grind, or bolt component parts per fitters instructions to obtain required configurations and positions for welding, sometimes on positioners.
Operate manual or semi-automatic welding equipment to fuse metal segments, using processes listed below as well as change gas bottles for welding equipment.
Monitor the burning and welding processes to avoid overheating of parts or warping, shrinking, distortion, or expansion of the material.
Detect faulty operation of equipment or defective materials and notify supervisors.
Recognize, set up, and operate hand and power tools common to the welding trade.
Operate a small forklift,scissor lift, andoverhead crane.
Work with coworkers and other departments effectively to meet deadlines.
Lift and rotate heavy equipment up to 20 lbs and lift heavy metal pieces up to 60 lbs.
**Skills/Qualifications/Licensing:**
Perform SMAW (Shielded metal arc welding aka stick welding) in 3G vertical up position and air arc (back gouge) per ASME code regulations that will pass 100% x-ray.
Perform FCAW (Flux core arc welding), GMAW (Gas metal arc welding), GTAW (Gas tungsten arc welding),
SAW (Submerged arc welding), and SAW Strip welding per ASME code regulations will pass 100% x-ray.
Perform plasma cutting or oxy-acetylene burning of metal components.
Proficient at air arc (back gouge).
Education:
High School Diploma or GED
Vocational/Technical/Business School preferred
Experience:
Certified in one or more of the welding process described above with at least two to five years of experience
