    In this position, you will primarily be responsible for education and outreach, overseeing and managing chipping crew operations, and the Neighborhood Chipping Program for the Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) Wildfire Mitigation section.

    Essential Job Functions - the basic job duties an employee must be able to perform:
    • Oversee community education and outreach activities to build engagement on wildfire risk
    • Oversee and manage the CSFD Wildfire Mitigation Neighborhood Chipping Program
    • Respond to homeowner requests to coordinate and conduct onsite consultations and neighborhood presentations
    • Develop, implement, and present educational programs using Microsoft PowerPoint and other forms of media
    • Work with section manager on community outreach, including neighborhood meetings, onsite homeowner consultations, public service announcements, champion recognition, media interviews, group presentations, mentoring, and marketing materials (fliers, newsletters, pamphlets, brochures, etc.)
    • Work with homeowner associations; community groups; non-profits; and public, private, local, state, and federal partnerships to coordinate neighborhood meetings, chipping events, recognition events, projects, and collaborative efforts
    • Oversee, manage and coordinate chipping crews’ daily operations and activities
    • Oversee and manage Firewise USA applications for communities in the City of Colorado Springs wildland urban interface
    • Conduct media interviews and represent the CSFD Wildfire Mitigation Section on committees and at workshops as needed
    • Conduct vegetation management inspections in the wildland urban interface
    • Safely operate and maintain high powered and specialized equipment, including dump trucks, woodchippers, chainsaws, power tools (i.e. brush cutters, leaf blowers, mowers), and hand tools
    • Assist with training Wildfire Mitigation Section staff on high powered and specialized equipment
    • Track and report activity for grants including photos, maps, and narratives for monthly and quarterly reports
    • Track grants, contracts, and matching funds for grant purposes
    • Research and apply for grant opportunities related to forestry and wildfire mitigation
    • Maintain databases, the Wildfire Risk Assessment website, and the neighborhood chipping online sign-up programs
    • Update information and enter information into the WHINFOE (Wildfire Hazard Information Extraction) model
    • Assist with contract specifications, administration, and closeout of fuels reduction projects. This includes marking removal trees, flagging project boundaries, and collecting data.
    • Motivate and evaluate assigned personnel; if necessary, implement discipline procedures
    • Support a Type II Plans Section by tracking and ordering resources, checking the status, and handling logistics during an emergency
    • Oversee and manage the Wildfire Mitigation webpage
    We are looking for candidates who demonstrate:
    Knowledge of:
    • Community education, public presentations, and educational outreach opportunities
    • Wildfire mitigation concepts, fire behavior, and vegetation management treatment options
    • Principles and practices of wildfire risk education program development and implementation
    • Principles of lead supervision and training
    • Methods and techniques of data collection
    • Principles and practices of record keeping, business correspondence, and report preparation
    • Basic GIS (Geographic Information System)
    Ability to:
    • Deliver speeches and public presentations on wildfire risk to local media and large group organizations
    • Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing
    • Oversee, coordinate, and implement programs related to wildfire mitigation
    • Evaluate and develop programs to meet community needs
    • Ensure program compliance with mandated City policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
    • Analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions, and implement recommendations in support of goals
    • Safely operate and maintain various hand and power tools, including chainsaws, chippers, brush cutters, and leaf blowers
    • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with the citizens of Colorado Springs, customers, and staff

    Successful candidates will have

    • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in public administration, business administration, community development, social sciences, or other specifically related field
    • One year (1) of full-time program administration experience
    • Possess, or obtain upon hire, and maintain a valid, non-probationary Colorado driver’s license not subject to restriction related to alcohol and/or drug violations or pending charges
    One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post-high school education.

    Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements.

    Ideal candidates will also have

    • One year of supervisory experience
    • Experience writing, planning, evaluating, and/or administering contracts
    • Experience training other employees on the safe operation of power equipment and machinery
    • Experience which demonstrates proficiency in public education and outreach opportunities
    • Grant research and management experience
    • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
    • Certified Wildland Type II fire fighter (NWCG S-130/190 Training - Redcard)
    • National Wildfire Coordination Group (NWCG) Wildland Fire Chainsaw Certification
