Academic Advising Director directs the academic advising department, its processes, and its advisors. Works closely with academic advisors to ensure that a proactive and high-quality approach is taken with all students advising needs. Being an Academic Advising Director assists Dean or Associate Dean in the preparation and implementation of department wide goals, procedures, and controls. Analyzes existing goals and programs and recommends improvements. Additionally, Academic Advising Director requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to the associate dean. The Academic Advising Director manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. Extensive knowledge of department processes. To be an Academic Advising Director typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 to 3 years supervisory experience may be required.     Position Summary:
    This position is designed to assist students to move more efficiently and effectively towards graduation and career goals. This individual will have the responsibility of providing advising support, outreach, recruiting and referral, assisting with divisional communication, and developing and participating in a variety of program, division and university events for one academic division (Business, Communication and the Environment). This individual will collaborate with Admissions and other campus constituents to participate in activities focused on recruitment, advising, and retention.

    The successful candidate will be responsible for monitoring and tracking students' expected academic degree progress in collaboration with faculty advisors and providing intrusive advising to students in the division who have been identified as needing supplemental advising, support, and/or academic coaching. The successful candidate will consult and collaborate with various campus offices and services as needed for students at academic risk. This position provides technical support, service support, and training to faculty advisors.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    Bachelors degree
    Two years experience in advising or related field
    Experience with student information systems and degree audit systems
    Demonstrated knowledge of and experience providing excellent customer service

    Preferred Qualification :
    Masters degree
    Experience with student career counseling
    Demonstrated competence in student data tracking and analysis

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    Demonstrated ability to advise students on academic requirements and provide course planning through graduation.
    Ability to learn and articulate university, major, and general education requirements and their application to specific major programs.
    Knowledge of student advising practices and resources, including curriculum and graduation requirements specific to the academic major.
    Ability to synthesize and consolidate information (curricular requirements, policies and procedures, job, and career opportunities).
    Demonstrated ability to assist students to connect academic programs with career intentions and to implement career planning.
    Demonstrated ability to recognize and identify the various levels of problems students encounter and to assist students to work through those problems or to refer students to appropriate campus resources as necessary.
    Demonstrated ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, and productive work atmosphere in and outside the University.
    Excellent verbal/public speaking, written communication, and interpersonal skills.
    Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others, including students, staff, faculty, division directors and other administrators, parents, and visitors.
    Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
    Strong organizational skills and ability to use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments.
    Ability to interpret, communicate and apply policies and procedures.
    Working knowledge of, or ability to quickly learn, University infrastructure, policies, and procedures.
    Excellent computer skills and proficiency with a variety of computer applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, on-line systems, Internet, web page maintenance, as well as online calendaring and email.
    Knowledge of student development theory and its application to higher education including how to assess student needs (academic, personal, social) when assisting with educational and career goals.

    Special Conditions
    Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for
    occasional professional development.
    Must be able to work additional hours and adjust working hours to meet
    special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on
    an emergency basis.
    Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background check.
