Animal Technician provides daily care for research animals of various species. Cleans and disinfects cages and equipment. Being an Animal Technician monitors the health and well being of the animals, maintains logs of animal diet, behavior, vital signs and other data. Follows standard operating procedures and all biosafety and animal welfare regulations. Additionally, Animal Technician may perform procedures to collect samples. May transport animals to and from laboratories. Requires a high school diploma. May require Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) or other certification. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Animal Technician works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area. **Job Summary:**
We are seeking a dedicated Veterinary Technician Assistant to join our team. The ideal candidate will assist in providing excellent care to our animal patients and support our veterinary staff in delivering top-notch service.
Overall Responsibility: To assist the doctors with the flow of their appointments for both annual well visits and sick visits and other procedures performed by the doctor. The assistant must be able to work with cats and dogs.
Responsibilities: The responsibilities of Veterinary technician assistant, include, but are not limited to the following activities:
● Assisting doctors in the rooms for exams
● Vaccine preparation
● Restraint for lab work and treatments
● Assisting LVTs
● Giving baths, expressing anal glands, and perform nail trims
● Sending out lab work and performing in-house blood work using IDEXX lab equipment
● Setting up and performing radiographs
● Learning AviMark, including input of charges and medical record keeping
● Client communication and basic GP education
● Stocking and cleaning exam rooms, bathrooms, treatment areas, kennels, etc.
● Triaging emergency cases
● Knowledge of common medications, filling medications
● Ability of administering subcutaneous fluids and injections
● Familiar with the recovery procedures for post-surgical/anesthetized patients.
Educational Requirements: 1-year veterinary technician experience preferred – veterinary assistant or technician degree a plus.
Physical Requirements: This job is physically active and requires frequent bending and standing for long periods of time. It requires routine lifting and restraining animals. You must be able to lift up to 40 lbs.
Interacts with: The entire PSAH hospital (receptionists/technicians/doctors/clients)
