Animal Technician jobs in Summerville, SC

Animal Technician provides daily care for research animals of various species. Cleans and disinfects cages and equipment. Being an Animal Technician monitors the health and well being of the animals, maintains logs of animal diet, behavior, vital signs and other data. Follows standard operating procedures and all biosafety and animal welfare regulations. Additionally, Animal Technician may perform procedures to collect samples. May transport animals to and from laboratories. Requires a high school diploma. May require Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) or other certification. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Animal Technician works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area.     ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS :

    • Adheres to the highest ethical standards and provisions of animal care in a safe, competent, professional and humane manner at all times.
    • Performs shelter exam and evaluation of each animal upon intake.
    • Evaluates animals for any illness or injuries needing immediate treatment.
    • Performs animal processing and testing.
    • Assists with animal husbandry and medications.
    • Cleans and maintains all aspects related to maintenance of the facility.
    • Oversees isolation ward and isolation animals.
    • Ensures hospitalized patients are receiving care as needed.
    • Coordinates with staff to schedule appointments for rechecks.
    • Provides quality service to clients, volunteers and staff recognizing their individual contributions to the success of our organization.
    • Maintains knowledge and current certifications related to compliance with appropriate procedures and regulations for animal containment and animal care standard violations.
    • Maintains and safely operates equipment used in the performance of duties related to the position.
    • Maintains kennels, facilities, tanks and exhibits.
    • Assists with budget recommendations.
    • Maintains inventory of medications and supplies.
    • Performs animal maintenance, including cleaning, feeding, trimming and clipping.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Minimum Requirements to Perform Work

    • High School diploma or equivalent;
    • Six (6) months of related animal care experience;
    • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license for South Carolina with safe driving record.

    Special Requirements :

    • Must have or be able to obtain a euthanasia certification within six (6) months of employment.
    • Departmental testing may be administered during interview;
    • A criminal background check will be completed on selected applicant if a current one (less than 3 years old) is not on file.

    Physical Demands

    This position requires the employee to reach, pull and push with hands and arms; stand; use hands to handle, feel, finger, grasp or operate objects, tools or controls;

    sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; use mental acuity and repetitive motion; and walk, talk and hear. The employee must frequently lift and / or move up to ninety (90) pounds.

    Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
