  • Starting as a loose collection of gifts, records, and valuable materials handed down between administrations and librarians for decades, the Archives began to formalize in the 1950s. It comprises school publications, photographic and multimedia images, artifacts, institutional records, and manuscript collections that explain the historical events, growth, and development of Punahou School.

    Punahou School is actively seeking an Assistant Archivist who will be responsible for providing maintenance and access to the Archives and Special Collections in keeping with the mission and values of Punahou School. Primary duties include, but are not limited to:

    • Ensure that materials in Archives and Special Collections are accessible to the Punahou School community and the public.
    • Develop strategies for and implement the digitization of archival, manuscript, and special collections.
    • Ensure preservation guidelines for holdings maintenance, collections storage, exhibit, handling, and reformatting are upheld.
    • Support and maintain appraisal, collection, processing, cataloging, digitization, preservation, promotion, and provision of access to Punahou School archive records of enduring value and to special collections including manuscripts, rare books, maps, and artifacts.


    Position Details:

    • Work Year: 12 Months 
    • Work Hours: Monday - Friday, Between 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM, Schedule may vary based on operational needs
    • Starting Hourly Rate*: $25.84/Hour


    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in History, Archives, Library Science, or related field. ALA-accredited master's degree in Archives, Library Science, or related field preferred.
    • Digital Archives Specialist (SAA) training or similar training is preferred.
    • Two (2) years in special collections and/or archives, or related experience. 
    • Experience providing reference and instruction services. 
    • Experience in soliciting, acquiring, processing, digitizing, and preserving collections.
    • Knowledge of current standards and best practices as well as developing trends related to the appraisal, processing/cataloging, and digitization of primary source materials including metadata schemas, digital preservation, and open access initiatives.
    • Lead or supervisory experience preferred. 
    • Experience working in a K-12 school, teaching experience preferred.
    • Familiarity with the Punahou community and history is preferred. 
    • Strong background in ‘Ike Hawai’i.
    • Knowledge of records management standards and practices including digital preservation. 
    • Ability to use digital technologies to create and deliver collections electronically.
    • Knowledge of and experience with preservation and conservation issues relating to special format materials.
    • Knowledge of emerging technological advances relating to digital preservation as well as awareness of tools and techniques for identifying and working with information of a sensitive or confidential nature.
    • Knowledge of copyright law as it applies to both published and unpublished digital content along with an understanding of the research process, the data life cycle, and scholarly communication trends.
    • Experience with outreach and programming activities related to manuscript and archival collections.
    • Evidence of commitment to the archival profession by active engagement with professional organizations locally, regionally, and nationally through service on committees, presentations, and publications, and in leadership positions.  
    • Mastery of core standards and best practices for the arrangement and description of archival materials (DACS, MARC, EAD, etc.)
