    NATURE OF JOB:
    Assists patrons in locating and obtaining materials and information in the Local History and Genealogy Department. Assists in the acquisition, preservation, organization, and display of historic materials. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • Assists patrons with local history and genealogy research in person, by phone and through email.
    • Analyzes documents and ephemera such as government records, family histories, photographs, maps and letters to determine value to posterity.
    • Assembles historical data by compiling news clippings, photographs, and miscellaneous published and unpublished materials.
    • Participates in the cataloging and safekeeping of valuable materials and coordinates disposition of materials not meeting selection criteria.
    • Prepares or directs preparation of document descriptions and reference aids for use of archives such as accession lists, indexes, guides, bibliographies, abstracts, and microfilmed copies of documents.
    • Participates in filing and cross indexing of selected documents in alphabetical and chronological order.
    • Assists in digitization of photographs and other library materials for inclusion in the catalog and on the library website.
    • Assists government agencies, scholars, journalists, and others conducting research by supplying available materials and information.
    • Arranges tours of Local History Room and collection as requested; conducts outreach presentations in the community.
    • Cleans, catalogs, labels and stores specimens.
    • Installs, arranges, and exhibits materials to promote the collection.
    • Provides training classes for the public and staff on the use of resources available online and within the Local History and Genealogy Department. 
    • Regular reliable full-time attendance as scheduled.
    • The employer may add to or change duties at any time and as determined by the County and its leaders to best ensure that the public is served through the work of the Department.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned.
    MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
    • Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year College or technical school; or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
    • Must maintain good interpersonal and communication skills to deal with public.
    • Must be able to speak, write, and comprehend English language.
    LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS:
    Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Florida driver license upon offer of employment with a driving record acceptable to the County Driving Policy and insurance program.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
    • Must have good interpersonal and communication skills to deal with public.
    • Outstanding project management and organizational skills.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
    • Expertise in the use of MS Word, Excel, and Outlook is essential.
    • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals and professional journals.
    • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
    • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, library staff, and the general public.
    • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
    • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
    • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
    • Ability to type; experience with word processing; knowledge of basic computer operations, including use of mouse and creation of files and folders.
    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
    Work is primarily performed in an indoor, climate-controlled environment and has moderate exposure to disagreeable elements (e.g., irate customer, extreme noise, heat, odors, heights and/or dust). 
     
    This position requires stooping, crouching, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, visual acuity (i.e. seeing up close, seeing far away, depth perception), kneeling, reaching, pushing, talking, standing, climbing, finger movement, repetitive motions.  Frequent lifting 10 to 25 pounds; occasional lifting up to 50 lbs.  Employee must be able to push or pull a loaded two-sided, six shelf book cart. Employee must occasionally retrieve library materials by climbing and/or reaching to top shelves of standard 84” library shelving and stooping to floor-level shelves of library shelving and bottom drawers of file cabinets.
