Instruction and Public Services Archivist- Libraries

  • The West Virginia & Regional History Center (WVRHC) invites applications for the position of Instruction and Public Services Archivist (IPSA). The WVRHC seeks a collaborative and user-centered archivist to develop, deliver, and coordinate instructional activities in support of WVU’s teaching mission and provide oversight for the WVRHC’s reference and research services.

    The IPSA will actively engage with faculty to provide research and teaching support for various disciplines from WVU colleges and schools. Using the collections at the WVRHC, the Instruction and Public Services Archivist will develop teaching resources and deliver instructional sessions that integrate primary source materials in the classroom. The IPSA will also collaborate with librarians in WVU Libraries Student Success and Research Support units to discover new teaching opportunities and build new curricular relationships across campus. The position will coordinate instructional activities within the WVRHC.

    The IPSA will also lead the WVRHC’s public services operations by providing guidance and support for the reference staff. The position directly supervises one library associate with indirect supervision of two library assistants and a small group of student workers . The IPSA is responsible for updating operational procedures and workflows and directing the collection and analysis of relevant statistics. The IPSA may occasionally provide reference and research services as needed. The IPSA may also support K-12 teaching and learning and public programming featuring WVRHC collections.

    Archivists and librarians at WVU hold non-tenured faculty appointments, and a record of job performance, professional development/research, and service is required for reappointment and promotion in rank. All librarians are members of the Library Faculty Assembly and participate in the professional life of this organization. The minimum starting salary for the IPSA is $61,000.

Our collections include more than 1.8 million books, 400,000 eBooks, and 117,000 eJournals.

    The West Virginia & Regional History Center (WVRHC) is the archives and special collections library at West Virginia University. We are a repository and research center that serves the public in addition to WVU faculty, staff, and students. The Center holds over 20,000 linear feet of collections and over 100,000 books that document the unique history and culture of West Virginia and central Appalachia. Collection strengths include authors and artists papers; feminist activism; WVU history; West Virginia government, politics, and policy; modern congressional archives; labor history; and family history among others. The WVRHC is also the home of a world class collection of rare books that include Shakespeare’s folios, first editions of British and American literature, the works of Isaac Asimov, and more.

    Qualifications


    Eligible applicants must hold an MLS from an ALA-accredited library school or equivalent and have two or more years of experience working in archives, special collections, libraries, or other heritage organizations. Additionally, applicants must have a demonstrated understanding of primary source literacy and historic research methods; presentation, pedagogical, and technology skills for effective teaching; excellent communication and interpersonal skills; and the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.

    Teaching experience appropriate for an archival setting; a degree in a subject related to major collections in the WV & Regional History Center; knowledge of West Virginia history and/or American history; and supervisory experience are desired.
