Fleet Maintenance Manager

  • GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK

    As our Fleet Maintenance Manager you will use your excellent communication, organization, and multitasking skills to engage your diesel technicians, maintain good morale among your team, and meet our company needs.

    You will also play an integral role in the hiring, training, and ongoing development of vehicle maintenance technicians to ensure that our highly skilled workforce is able to meet our company’s needs.     ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS

    Coordinate, schedule, and audit vehicle maintenance repairs to include preventative, mechanical and electrical repair to motor coaches.
    Maintain prescribed standard hours per repair order
    Prioritize and assign work to meet company needs
    Ensure quality, compliance, and safety of company’s assets
    Control repair, inventory, and labor costs
    Coach and mentor technicians
    Monitor technician work levels
    Understand and follow federal, state and local regulations, such as those governing the disposal of hazardous wastes, OSHA right-to know-etc.
    Ensure that all documents are accounted for.
    Manage facilities, assuring a clean and safe working environment





    Customer-related:




    Coordinate services on motor coaches with the Operations Manager
    Assign repair orders to technicians.
    Communicate with drivers to determine the nature of the mechanical problem(s).
    Obtain vehicle data.
    Test-drive the vehicle or refer to the test technician as necessary.
    Advise drivers on the inspection of their motor coaches with manufacturer’s specifications, using maintenance menus (if applicable).
    Indicate on repair order the exact repair instructions, making a special note of the main reason(s) the customer brought the vehicle in. Repair orders must be legible.
    Establish a time promised.
    Follow up progress of each repair order during the day. Contact Operations regarding any changes in the estimate or time promised. Record changes on repair order in approved fashion.
    Analyze quality control report.
    Maintain follow-up program on additional items found in need of repair.
    Be responsible for quality control, to ensure that work is completed as requested and to reduce comebacks.
    Inspect all vehicles for body work, notify Operations that the work is needed.
    Manage staff schedules in accordance with company needs.



    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    Considerable knowledge of:




    • Methods, materials, tools and techniques used in vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance.

    • Diagnosing mechanical problems and performing repairs.

    • Safety practices and procedures.



    Working knowledge of:




    • Mechanical design and fabrication.

    • Electrical systems, including computerized induction/ignition systems.

    • Use of power and hand tools.

    • Use of diagnostic equipment.

    • Acetylene and electric arc welding.

    • Operation of vehicles and equipment for diagnostic purposes.



    Ability to:




    • Effectively handle lifting of various objects weighing up to 60 pounds.

    • Prepare and maintain records and reports.

    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public.

    • Follow written and verbal instructions, including manufacturers’ service specifications.

    • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

    • High school diploma or the equivalent.

    Five years of experience in vehicle equipment repair.
    3-5 years of fleet maintenance management experience preferred, or at least 3 years of team management in an environment with strong operational metrics.
    Associates or Tech School degree preferred
    Strong customer service and organizational skills required
    Valid driver’s license required, CDL preferred
    Proficiency with computers including Microsoft Office and web-based applications preferred
    Must know how to budget & manage maintenance expenses
    General knowledge of vehicle mechanical operations. ASE certification preferred.
    Excellent oral and written communication skills.
    PHYSICAL DEMANDS/REQUIREMENTS

    Position requires stooping, bending and moving throughout the service department.
    May lift up to 60 pounds occasionally.
    May work with a Video Display Terminal. He/she will be exposed to noise, vibration, dust, exhaust fumes, and other hazardous and non-hazardous materials. Road-testing of vehicles may be required.
    Valid driver’s license required, CDL preferred
