Collaborates and supports colleagues regarding research interests and co-curricular activities. Additionally, Assoc. Professor - Accounting typically reports to a department head. Requires a PhD or terminal degree appropriate to the field. Has considerable experience and is qualified to teach at undergraduate and graduate levels and conducts research and case studies in field of interest and may publish findings in trade journals or textbooks.     This position supports the work of the Mystic Valley YMCA, a leading nonprofit located in Malden, Massachusetts with a mission to strengthen our communities with relevant, continually evolving programs and services that enrich the lives of all people in spirit, mind and body. 

    The accounting director manages the overall accounting function, including general ledger postings, reconciliations and reporting.  This person also works closely with the payroll administrator, ensures preparation of complete and accurate monthly and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP, and assists in the preparation of the annual operating budget.  The accounting director trains staff, administers approved accounting policies and procedures and maintains internal controls throughout the YMCA.

    Qualifications

    1. Bachelor’s degree in accounting or equivalent.
    2. Understanding of and experience in GAAP are required.
    3. Five years of experience or more in a supervisory accounting role.
    4. Experience in a nonprofit environment is preferred.
    5. Knowledge of banks, banking systems and cash management.
    6. Knowledge of and expertise with computerized accounting systems.
    7. Ability to develop spreadsheets and familiarity with standard business software systems.  Excellent spreadsheet skills are critical.

    Essential Functions

    1. Hires, trains, supervises and manages all accounting personnel including accounts payable and receivable, and accounting clerk.
    2. Maintains the MVYMCA’s accounting system to accomplish the proper recording and reporting of all operations, transactions, assets and liabilities of the YMCA for all funds.  Also maintains systems to track all data required for disclosure in the audited financial statements.
    3. Serves as resource person to management and program personnel in all matters relating to accounting, cash receipts and cash disbursements.
    4. Supervises or prepares reconciliations of all YMCA banking, investment and financial asset accounts on a monthly basis.
    5. Prepares financial statements required by management, the Board, and outside agencies.
    6. Prepares reports for various federal and state governmental agencies. In coordination with the external auditors compiles information for the IRS Form 990 tax return.
    7. Facilitates key functions such as the annual independent audit. Develops and maintains key relationships, including with banks and vendors.
    8. Manages operating cash flow management including insuring timely payment to vendors and to project cash flow requirements throughout the year.
    9. Conducts special internal audits, accounting studies, analyses and cost studies as required.  Provides recommendations.
    10. Makes recommendations to ensure that computer and software systems provide accurate information and adequate internal controls.
