    Position description

    The Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the University of California, Davis is recruiting an Assistant Professor of Agricultural Economics. This is an academic year (9-month), tenure-track Assistant Professor position that includes an appointment in the California Agricultural Experiment Station (AES). Faculty members who hold an Agricultural Experiment Station appointment have a responsibility to conduct research and outreach relevant to the mission of the California Agricultural Experiment Station. Participation in outreach programs and performance of University service are also expected.

    The appointee is expected to establish a competitively funded research program in agricultural economics to address critical or emerging issues in agriculture and food relevant to California and the United States, including but not limited to the following areas: production, demand, markets, international trade, agricultural policy, and applied econometrics and data sciences. The appointee will be responsible for teaching an average of 3 quarter courses starting in year 3, with teaching reductions in the first two years. The expected course load is one course in year 1, two courses in year 2, and three courses in year 3 and subsequent years. The appointee is expected to teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Possible undergraduate courses include agricultural policy (ARE 120), agricultural sustainability (ARE 121), agricultural markets (ARE 130), cooperative business enterprises (ARE 132), managerial marketing (ARE 136), farm management (ARE 140), futures and options (ARE 139), international commodity and resource markets (ARE 138), and agricultural labor (ARE 150). Possible graduate courses include a M.S.-level course in agricultural economics and policy (ARE 223) as well as one of three Ph.D.-level courses in agricultural economics (ARE 231, 232, or 233). The appointee is expected to advise graduate students on their M.S. theses and/or Ph.D. dissertations. Undergraduate honors theses may also be part of fulfilling advising expectations. Participation in and development of public outreach and/or community engagement programs, and performance of departmental and university service is expected. This position is expected to collaborate with Cooperative Extension Specialists and Advisors, partners in allied industries, or other appropriate public stakeholders.

    This recruitment is conducted at the assistant rank. The resulting hire will be at the assistant rank, regardless of the proposed appointee's qualifications.

    Office space will be provided by the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics in the Social Science and Humanities building on the UC Davis central campus.

    Start-up funding will be provided based on the programmatic needs of the successful candidate.

    Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
    • Ph.D. or equivalent in a field of Agricultural Economics, Economics, or Applied Economics at the time of appointment.
    Preferred qualifications (other preferred, but not required, qualifications for the position)

    * Evidence of leadership and organizational skills relevant to the development of a successful research, teaching and outreach program in agricultural and food economics.

    * Evidence of scholarship during graduate and, where applicable, post-graduate activities.

    * Demonstrated ability or potential to obtain extramural support for research activities.

    * Interest, understanding, and commitment to contributing to diversity. Demonstrated ability to contribute to diversity and inclusion of groups that are underrepresented in the academy through extension education, research, and/or service would be a plus.
    - Statement of Contributions to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion will be assessed by their general quality and the candidates' awareness, contributions, and plans for future efforts related to diversity and inclusion.
