    Position: Faculty, full-time

    The Department of Art Education, Art History, & Media Studies in the College of Visual and Performing Arts seeks an Assistant Teaching Professor of Art History with a specialization in Modern/Contemporary Art. The ideal candidate will be a forward-thinking scholar and educator with strong intellectual and leadership skills. The new faculty member will join a vibrant, practice-based department; One integrated with our studio and design areas, with access to art exhibition space.

    University of Massachusetts Dartmouth College of Visual and Performing Arts aims to be a transformative cultural community, responding to and generating dialogue in the arts and beyond. As artists and scholars, the College seeks to empower students and faculty to engage fearlessly with a changing world through critical study, creative practice, and interdisciplinary collaborations. The ideal candidate will combine history, theory, and practice, enabling emerging artists, historians, educators, and curators to step into and engage with a radically changing world.

    Responsibilities:

    • Teach a 4-4 load of courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including art history survey courses, upper-level courses, and graduate seminars. This may also include a General Education Humanities course.
    • Mentor undergraduate and graduate students and supervise undergraduate majors.
    • Contribute to curriculum design, program development, and program outreach.
    • Actively participate in our learning community.
    • Contribute service to the university and profession.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • PhD in Art History or a related field at the time of appointment.
    • Ability to teach courses on art since 1945 in a global context.
    • Evidence of success in promoting an environment that advances open intellectual discourse and the well-being of all in the context of cultural pluralities and differences.
    • Evidence of capacity to collaborate with faculty from other disciplines and staff collegially.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Research and teaching expertise in one of the following: media arts, non-Euro/US art histories, arts management.
    • Teaching experience as the instructor of record at the university level.
    • Record of excellence in undergraduate and/or graduate teaching.
    • Successful experience with innovative or cross-disciplinary curricula.
    • Engagement with curatorial practice.
