Position Summary:
The
Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department at the New Jersey Institute of
Technology (NJIT) invites applications for a tenure-track position at the
Assistant/Associate or Full Professor level in the areas of Artificial Intelligence/Data
Science/Machine Learning as applied
to Mechanical Engineering.
The
applications of AI, Big Data, and Machine Learning techniques to Mechanical
Engineering include, but are not limited to the following areas:
Robotics, automation and control. Development
of novel robotics; mechanisms and actuators. Healthcare, rehabilitation and
assistive robotics.
Design and Manufacturing. Smart sustainable manufacturing and design, additive
manufacturing, generative design.
Mechanics of materials. Theoretical, computational, or experimental
approaches applied to novel materials such as bioinspired materials; materials
used in energy storage/conversion systems.
Thermo-fluids mechanics. Application of thermal-fluids to biological systems or bio-inspired systems;
environmental systems. complex fluids and thermal systems for energy systems,
multiphase systems with phase change.
With
28 tenured/tenure-track faculty, the NJIT MIE Department is an advanced
research-active department. Research thrust areas include Biomechanics,
computational fluid mechanics, biomedical devices, robotics, controls and
automation, smart materials, mechanics of complex materials, advanced energy
systems, thermal-fluid systems, climate modeling, computer aided design,
machine learning, supply chain and operations research. MIE research projects
are funded by NSF, other federal agencies, NJ state, industry and private
foundations. The department offers bachelor, master and doctoral programs in
both Mechanical and Industrial Engineering serving about 1300 students.
Essential Functions:
Candidates
are expected to conduct and advance scholarly research in pertinent areas and
be able to secure external research funding from federal and state agencies and
from industry. Candidates are also expected to teach undergraduate and graduate
level courses in mechanical engineering as well as provide service to the
program, department, university, and profession.
Prerequisite Qualifications:
- Applicants
are expected to have a doctorate (Ph.D. or D.Sc.) in mechanical engineering, or
closely related field.
- Applicants should have evidence of high-quality
scholarly achievements that demonstrates independent research, and a commitment
to excellence in undergraduate and graduate education.
- Industry experience and
the ability to obtain professional licensure are desirable.
- Candidates must
have the potential to establish an externally funded research program in their
area of expertise.
- At
the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be
exempted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the
university, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically
preparing the candidate for success in the position.
