    The Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) at the University of Pennsylvania seeks an Associate Vice Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. This is an inaugural role working with, and reporting to, the Vice Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the School of Arts and Sciences. This professional will work alongside the Vice Dean to further the School of Arts and Sciences' core commitments to achieving and maintaining excellence through diversity; fostering a welcoming community; and contributing to social justice through its research, teaching, and community engagement.

    The University of Pennsylvania School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) forms the foundation of the scholarly excellence that has established Penn as one of the world's leading research universities. We teach students across all 12 Penn schools, and our academic departments span the reach from anthropology and biology to sociology and South Asian studies.

    Members of the Penn Arts & Sciences faculty are leaders in creating new knowledge in their disciplines and are engaged in nearly every area of interdisciplinary innovation. The School's three educational divisions fulfill different missions, united by a broader commitment to providing our students with an unrivaled education in the liberal arts. The College of Arts and Sciences is the academic home of the majority of Penn undergraduates and provides 60 percent of the courses taken by students in Penn's undergraduate professional schools. The Graduate Division offers doctoral training to over 1,300 candidates in more than 30 graduate programs. And the College of Liberal and Professional Studies provides a range of educational opportunities for lifelong learners and working professionals.

    The new Vice Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in SAS has been charged with establishing the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ODEI) within the School. The staffing of ODEI is underway in order to provide a thoughtful, strategic, programmatic, and effective approach to deepening equity and inclusion within the diverse SAS community. ODEI serves undergraduate and graduate students, staff, faculty, and post-doctoral fellows within the School.

    DUTIES:
    Co-Lead efforts to develop a more diverse pool of candidates for graduate education, post-doctoral fellowships, and the professoriate.
    Work closely with SAS faculty, department leaders in the School, as well as staff and administrative campus partners to create and sustain pathway and bridge programs for minoritized scholars, particularly focusing on underrepresented populations in STEM fields.
    Connect the SAS community with external national pathway programs and develop Penn specific pathway programs within SAS departments.
    Assess SAS pathway programs and initiatives and compare outcomes with institutional and national data as well as trends. This will be accomplished through data collection, tracking, analysis, and presentations.
    Supervise staff in the Office.
    Foster an environment of inclusion and support for graduate students with minoritized identities.
    Create and build a network of support for post-doctoral fellows in SAS.
    Advise departments on, and implement best practices for increasing the diversity of their graduate student applicant pools, their admissions and recruitment efforts, and their support of students' academic and professional success.
    Develop strategies and create programs that foster and support diversity and inclusion efforts for the School community.
    Provide feedback to the SAS community on the effectiveness of the School's efforts and contribute suggestions for continued improvement.
    Monitor national trends, peer institution efforts, and seek benchmarks for successful diversity initiatives.
    Assist the Vice Dean in setting the strategy for the Office.
    Perform additional duties as assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS:
    Master's degree and 5 to 7 years of work experience in higher education, or equivalent combination of education and experience, is required. PhD is strongly preferred; teaching and mentoring experience in a research-intensive environment is strongly desired.
    Proven experience working with underrepresented populations in higher education is required.
    In-depth understanding and knowledge of issues of access, diversity, inclusion, equity, and social justice in a higher education setting.
    Strong administrative abilities, excellent interpersonal skills and understanding of cultural differences will be required in order to interact with a wide range of individuals, from undergraduates to senior faculty and administrators, both inside and outside the University.
    Strong communication (oral and written) skills and should be proficient at public speaking.
    Ability to work independently on concurrent projects is essential.
    Occasional travel and occasional work during evenings and weekends is required.
