Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences assists Dean with the management of administrative functions of the college of Arts and Sciences. Collaborates with Dean on planning college strategic initiatives and supports on college fundraising. Being an Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences provides administrative leadership in areas of curriculum development, institutional assessment and improvement, human resource, faculty development and performance appraisals, budget and finance, and facilities planning and management. Typically requires an advanced degree. Additionally, Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences typically reports to a Dean. The Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.     Primary Responsibilities

    Academic Planning and Operations

    Description
    • Provide input to and support A&S and campus-wide initiatives.
    • Serve as strategic liaison for key campus offices (e.g., Registrar’s Office, Career Center, Facilities, Accounting, and Provost’s Office) to implement consistent and equitable practices for personnel and resources.
    • Work with Program Chairs to build A&S academic schedule (400 classes per semester), resolve problems and conflicts, and adapt offerings to shifting enrollment patterns.
    • Coordinate and support program chairs in collaborative academic planning processes.

    Staff Supervision and Faculty Support

    Description
    • Execute employment processes for staff and adjunct faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences, including hiring, onboarding, and ongoing support.
    • Facilitate alignment of staff structure with changing unit needs; lead searches, hire, train, and supervise support staff and student employees while overseeing mentorship, professional development, and role clarity. The Assistant Dean directly supervises several reports and actively oversees a large staff by addressing changes and issues in organizational structure, role clarity, and operations.
    • Ensure full-time faculty compliance with contractual load obligations; discuss and document load arrangements, proposals, and unique scenarios; establish and communicate consistent and equitable load practices across unit and campus.

    Budget Management

    Description
    • Assist the Dean, as the primary budget manager, to oversee significant operating budget allocations for A&S offices and programs. This includes reviewing funding requests and applications; reviewing extraordinary expenditures; tracking all spending; requesting reports and transfers, account reconciliation, approving spending as appropriate, and ensuring compliance with all College policies.
    • Manage Provost Office allocations for faculty travel and student-faculty undergraduate research grants.
    • Oversee and approve transactions for all purchasing cards in A&S.

    Required Qualifications
    • A Master’s degree.
    • Demonstrated professional commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion in higher education.
    • Excellent leadership, communication, analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
    • At least three years of management experience in higher education, including oversight of budgets and personnel processes.

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Three or more years of teaching experience in higher education.
