Applications must be received by May 3, 2024,.The successful candidate will provide leadership and innovative directions to ensure efficient and effective administration in the following areas of responsibility important to the school’s success:Long-term Planning and DevelopmentDesign and build a strong research support infrastructure that would enable faculty to compete effectively for external funding, including a mentoring program on research proposal writing and development for junior faculty members. Overall strategic planning of research directions; provide leadership in the development of large-scale collaborative proposals by leveraging interdisciplinary strengths within the school and by partnering with other schools across the IU Indianapolis campus. Management of research space; long-term planning of research facilities and their renovation; strategic planning for research cores and centers; development and administration of policies for competitive allocation of research laboratory space.Development of a consistent operational framework for the administration of the School’s research centers clarify the organizational relationship and reporting lines between centers and departments to ensure that these centers will advance the research and graduate educational agenda of the academic departments. Strategic planning and serve as an advocate for development and allocation of internal and external resources to support growth of the School’s graduate programs; provide leadership in the development of innovative graduate research, professional, and interdisciplinary degrees.Research AdministrationDevelopment and administration of incentive policies for faculty research. Chair the School’s Research Committee and manage review of internal grants. Oversight of the School’s research administrative staff and the management of proposal processing, research funding, and research financial policies, including the use of indirect costs and vetting of start-up packages for new faculty. Identification, evaluation, and dissemination of major funding opportunities to faculty. Administration of research compliance policies (e.g., human subjects, animal welfare, biosafety, and radioactive materials), including oversight of Science Animal Resource Center (SARC), service as ex officio of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, and liaison to the IU Indianapolis Conflict of Interest Committee. Serve as the School representative to the IU Indianapolis Council of Associate Deans for Research and liaison to IU Indianapolis Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research.Graduate Education AdministrationServe as liaison to graduate deans of Indiana University and IU Indianapolis and represent the School on the IU Indianapolis Graduate Affairs Committee. Also, interact with Purdue University as needed to advocate for SoS students. Act as the Dean’s office liaison to School departments on issues concerning graduate affairs, graduate student funding, coordination of interdisciplinary graduate programs, and oversight of the School’s Graduate Education Committee. Identify, promote and help secure graduate student funding from external sources, and submit annual reports and proposals for internal graduate student funding.Community EngagementAssist the School in areas of external relationships through strategic contributions to and participation in initiatives of the School’s Office of Development and Alumni Relations. Work with the Dean and the Director of Development & Alumni Affairs to establish ties with local companies to create internships for our graduate students interested in careers in the corporate sector.Other tasks (as assigned by the Dean)Assist in recruitment, development, and retention of faculty and graduate students. Attend meetings of School of Science chairs Council, Steering Committee, and faculty assembly and provide reports on research, graduate education, and facilities.Basic qualifications; Applicants must be tenured School of Science faculty members – applicants at the Full Professor rank are preferred but the Search Committee will also consider applications from senior Associate Professors.
