Executive Director of Student Financial Aid

  • Job Summary:

    The executive director of student financial aid will collaborate with the vice provost for enrollment management, the Provost's Office, the Chancellor's Office and campus leadership to develop and execute a financial aid and student employment strategy that supports overall institutional goals. The executive director serves as the campus authority on federal, state, and institutional aid programs and is a participant in the university's strategic enrollment management planning. In addition, this individual serves as liaison with Strategic Communications and University Relations in managing media relations, and assisting with legislative and community advocacy for the university as they pertain to the complex and changing world of student financial aid.

    Responsibilities: Contributes to institutional strategic and enrollment planning, provides unit leadership and budget direction, and ensures compliance with regulatory guidelines and unit strategy in support of awarding financial aid to qualifying students.
    • 15% Directs strategic planning initiatives and establishes unit objectives to ensure appropriate use of resources and alignment with the strategic plan
    • 5% Develops operating policies and procedures to comply with regulations, institutional policies, and unit objectives
    • 5% Develops and audits the unit budget
    • 5% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
    • 30% Serves as the unit liaison to internal and external stakeholder groups providing organizational information and representing the interests of the unit
    • 20% Advises institutional leadership and unit leadership on financial aid matters
    • 5% Demonstrate thought leadership; develop and elevate research-practice partnerships in the field of higher ed access and success; initiate and lead international discussions regarding access for students globally at public research institutions
    • 5% Advises and collaborates with the VP on critical issues, representing the OSFA at meetings and events as requested; and serves on/leads various program and/or university committees as directed, including on appropriate shared governance committees
    • 5% Leads and supports special initiatives and/or grant-funded programs that require the Vice Provost's attention with respect to program design, planning, coordination, and interaction with internal and external stakeholders
    • 5% DEM is committed to the highest standard of service. This position will be a role model by
      practicing exemplary and respectful behaviors in all interactions. Participation in unit and divisional
      training plans are mandatory
    Tasks:
    • Serve in leadership roles in financial aid and enrollment management at the state, regional, and national levels
    • Build and sustain institutional, statewide, regional, national, and international networks to support collaboration on higher education access and success for students from socioeconomically diverse backgrounds
    • Collaborate with Division of Enrollment Management colleagues in aligning the work of the Office of Student Financial Aid in supporting campus enrollment goals, including increasing access and diversity
    • Consult with deans, directors, staff and faculty throughout campus in matters relating to student financial aid
    • Advise and counsel UW-Madison and UW-System federal and state relations staff, state and federal agencies, legislators, and their staffs
    • Work closely with the Chancellor, other senior leaders, and the Wisconsin Foundation and Alumni Association to increase activities and support for increasing need-based financial aid support from private donors

    Education:

    Required
    Master's Degree or other advanced degree required.

    Qualifications:

    -Minimum of seven years of experience in financial aid administration, currently at the associate director level or higher, with a proven track record of exemplary leadership through innovation and student customer service at a large complex institution.
    -A demonstrated commitment to increasing need-based aid and scholarships.
    -A demonstrated commitment to access and research practice partnerships that increase student success.
    -An appreciation for and an understanding of the role of technology and social media in financial aid and enrollment management.
    -A thorough understanding of federal financial aid programs and familiarity with how different state aid programs work.
    -Visionary leadership skills, strong verbal and written communication skills, superior strategic thinking and planning skills, excellent management skills, and the ability to work well with teams.
    -Knowledge of current best practices and trends in financial aid awarding practices and philosophies.
